Nowhere near as good as the original 1928 version.

I love Marc-Andre Grondin and the film has some stunning visuals, but somehow it just didn't play as well as the original. Also there were some changes towards the end that were disappointing.

Has anyone read the Victor Hugo novel? Which version is more faithful to the text?

I've read the book and trust me, the 1928 film is more faithful to the text. It isn't entirely accurate, mind you, but it's more faithful than this. This would be like taking West Side Story and claiming it's a faithful adaptation of Romeo and Juliet rather than just borrowing characters/plot points from it. Honestly, this new version could have just renamed the characters and it pretty much would have had its own original story. It's almost blasphemous to Hugo to claim this is a faithful adaptation.

Nevermore!
