Seriously What is going on with Terry Malick?

Did Mr. Malick write these scripts during his 20 year leave of absence? How do you write and direct 5 movies in 3 years? I just saw his upcoming films posted here and can't even believe it. Is he just making up for lost time?

he is getting up there in age you know. he doesnt have all the time in the world. he probably realized life is short and if he is going to say all he wants to say he better get doing it

Yes, Exactly.

It's unlikely we'll see more than one of these movies finished this decade.

reply

It's highly likely we'll see all of them finished this decade, with the possible exception of Voyage of Time.

Hell, I'm just glad to be living in the middle of Malick's Grand Productive Era™, where we're getting no less than seven films from him within a fifteen-year period. Compare that to, say, Kubrick's output, post-1974 (and who died way too soon). As long as he continues to remain fully-invested, creatively-energized, and eager to shoot, I won't be complaining.

its hilarious that someone can say with a straight face that we will get to see most of these films this decade. if we get 2 more i will be shocked, very shocked indeed. he spent about three years in post on tree of life and none of these new films have finished shooting yet.

We're gonna see one (To the Wonder) released in 2012 at Venice and Toronto. Lawless and Knights of Cups are being filmed back-to-back as we speak. I would say that makes it quite likely that these will be released relatively soon, possibly even in 2013. Voyage of Time is a different story. That we'll have to wait and see about. I bet if the project happens at all (fingers crossed), it will be after Knights of Cups and Lawless are released.

Voyage of Time is the one im most hyped about :/, I hope it does get a release, even sraight to DVD would make me happy lol XD

reply

Seriously? You actually believe that Voyage of Time, King of Cups, and the Untitled Austin project won't be released until 2020? How does time move in your world? He just released two films in back to back years.

it's 2016 now, and you have eaten your words. he's on a roll.

"There’s a good many pictures I’d like to make, we’ll see how many I’ll be allowed to make." - Terrence Malick at a Q&A in 2005

yes that quote is credible.

It's not an illness, it's just that he's getting his projects funded with better ease now

"I don't roll over for ANYBODY! especially the FEDS, without a GODDAMN GOOD EXPLANATION!"

reply

He knows he is getting old, so he wants to leave his mark behind.

Its that man again!!

Isn't it amazing? So many films in such a short amount of time, though, hopefully it won't be case of quantity over quality.

Yes. After a while, all of the blue harvesting, camera dodging, and micro-managing shenanigans probably seem a bit silly when you realize how much more you "could have" made (NOT speaking financially) had you approached things differently. It doesn't take away from the power of his previous work but hopefully at this point he's ready to loosen up a bit and put out more projects (which is good for us! and maybe, in a way, good for him?)

How, is he sick?

Your dam right!
