Scene where Jo said she didn't need an operation

What was that about? Was the mom just pumping the daughter for money, or was that a scene about the fathers sexual abuse of his daughters?

Also is that why Jo stopped talking to her sister, because she left her alone with the father after she ran off?

I just assumed Jo was pregnant and needed money for an abortion...

Jo looked young to be pregnant. But maybe so.

Basically, one can ask "what was that all about?" In almost every scene, and the movie as a whole.

i took it to mean that her mother was making up lies to pump angela for money. the mother is an addict who's really far down the hill with her addiction. that's why the younger sis said she'd leave soon too.
