Did it get cancelled?

hart hanson was tweeting things today that sounded awfully like a goodbye to the finder, but i hadn't heard anything so i thought i'd ask. i guess it could also just be the end of season one he was talking about, but i don't know.

reply

well look at the ratings .... Person Of Interest probably killed it

reply

The tweets appear to be related to a season 1 "wrap" party for the writers. They dropped an 18 million plus lead from American Idol to 6 million viewers this past week so it doesn't bode well.

reply

It's actually not that bad.

Chase: Wow. Yeah, I get it. House is adorable. I just want to hold him and never let go.

reply

I'd say it's ratings aren't half bad. It's got an average 6 million veiwers while Glee has been averaging 6.4 million viewers. Also considering that The Finder is a spin-off series and airing at the same time as Person of Interest (which is a huge hit)and is a brand-new show, I'd say it's doing pretty well.

Hufflepuffs are particularly good finders

reply

It's doing really bad for a post Idol show. When they move it to a different night, I wouldn't be surprised to see it drop to a 2.1 rating or lower.

reply

Are they moving it to a different night?

reply

More than likely. Idol is a staple show. Fox uses it to create buzz for new shows. I think Glee and Fringe (which is on it's last legs) were the last shows to successfully make the transition to another night.

Looking at it from a numbers/ratings standpoint, it most likely will be canceled. I know it's a new show, but those demo ratings and overall viewer ratings are bad, especially with AI as a lead in and all the promoting they did before it premiered. Granted, AI isn't what it used to be, but still. It would be one thing if the demos were good, like The New Girl's, but they're not. The only time it had good/semi-good demos was when ABC and CBS had repeats. To be honest, I'm a little surprised that it hasn't been canceled already. I wonder if it's because there are no new episodes of Bones ready yet so TPTB (at Fox) can't.

@WPP

While Glee might be averaging about the same number of total viewers, the only time it has fallen below 3.0 in the demos with the new episodes this season is on Valentine's Day, and it only fell to 2.8 (I checked because I don't watch it so I don't really pay attention to its demos and overall ratings). The only time that The Finder has gotten that rating is when ABC and CBS were showing repeats. All other episodes have been between 2.2 and 2.4, excluding the premiere and this week. While I don't completely understand demos, I do know they are more important to the networks than the number of total viewers.

Networks don't care about demos. Advertisers do. 18-49 is the target demo b/c they buy more stuff. The higher the numbers, the more advertisers are willing to pay for an ad. That's why ad rates go through the roof during the Super Bowl or during the Final Four in the NCAA. Nielsen still exists b/c advertisers want to know who is watching what. If that wasn't the case then cable giants like Comcast could just as easily tally viewers and sell the info.

I didn't realize it was only pulling in a 2.2 on average. That's damn bad. AI on it's worst night more than doubles big hits like Two and a Half, Big Bang, and Persons of interest. Hell even a genre, concept-heavy show like Fringe averaged a 3.0 following Idol,

reply

Honestly, I really don't understand the demos and what they mean. I just know that every time I talk about the overall viewer numbers, people tell me the demos are what really matter.

Yeah, when AI had that 2-hour episode a couple weeks ago the demos at 9 more than doubled The Finder's average. And if I remember correctly, AI's demos hit a low that night. So, yeah, that's bad when another show takes your place and more than doubles the average of your first 5 episodes even when it hits a low. Not to mention, the average of the first 5 episodes of Bones were better as well and it followed the XF, which didn't do as well as expected or as AI is.

Also, I didn't know that Fringe even pulled near or at least 3.0 in the demos on average behind AI. I knew Bones usually pulls 3.0-3.5, but I didn't know that Fringe did that well, too.

Jack: I love you.

I only mentioned the total audience earlier to illustrate that The Finder was losing a full 2/3 of the American Idol audience. Last week's episode only drew a 2.0 demo and after next week Fox has announced the show will be moved to Fridays. No other announcements using the cancelled word yet but none could really be expected until they secure whatever advertising revenue they can get to burn off those final six episodes.

reply

yeah , to bad . Nielson is so 1960's , must be a better way these days to see what people are watching

reply

Yeah I hate it too. Even though they are able to measure millions of people that's still a fraction of viewing population of the US.

Even if they covered 60 million homes, that would be less than one third of TV watchers in the country, but Nielsen serves the advertisers more than the networks, and advertisers want specifics.

reply

Officially, no it has not been cancelled yet, but many people believe it will be. It has drastically underperformed. Fox had big expectations for this show and it has come up extremely short. It was given a good time slot with a good lead in and it hasn't been able to bring in even an average sized audience. Now, The Finder's fate could possibly change once it goes to Fridays. Fox has always had trouble with Friday nights. If the Finder could maintain its current ratings on Fridays I think it has a shot at a renewal. But still it seems unlikely.

reply

I agree, this show making 2 seasons seems unlikely. Considering how many weeks pass in between new episodes I have no idea how they plan to keep the audience they built early on. Moving to Fridays will be the nail in the coffin.

reply

Everyone says this show is underperforming. It really did on thursdays. I think since the move to fridays, it has been respectable and deserves a chance to gain viewership over one more season.

reply

Yes, It's now officially cancelled.

reply

At this point yeah, it's canceled. I hope either another network gets it (unlikely since Fox is really possessive over their shows, even after cancellation) or they pick it back up. It's unlikely given FOX is also really stubborn, but here's hoping. It's actually a better show than they give it credit for, but what do you expect when you air them out of order?

reply

Fox announced on May 9, 2012 that they have cancelled the show. Which is sad!

reply

It was cancelled only because the man who played Leo, Michael Clarke Duncan, passed away. They didn't want to write him off in some lame way or get someone else to play him as it wouldn't be quite the same. :(
