I was very disappointed that they didn't reveal what those of us who saw Presumed Innocent or read the book already knew--that Barbara was the killer and Rusty had covered up for her for twenty years because he felt it was his fault. I think other people wouldn't quite understand the undercurrents in this movie; it was a mistake not to reveal this.

Sincere thanks, jabell, for easing my mind on this! It's been so long ago that I'd seen Presumed Innocent that I didn't connect the two movies until I saw the information on this site while I watched this one last night, and then I couldn't recall the clues or the denouement from the first, so it was like I was watching a completely new story. Then just a few minutes before the end of the first showing last night, I had a phone call and couldn't get out of it for 15-20 minutes after that, so missed everything after the point where he was walking out of the jail area. Then I tried to time the chance to watch the end of the second run, but came in after he'd mentioned the connections and why she did it and only caught that she'd done herself in to spite him. But the truth is, I had her figured out within the first hour, and wasn't even phased by the on-again, off-again clue of the computer message. Truth is, it was all very intriguing but kind of telegraphed, from my point of view!
