I'm out but I'm not out...

What do you think he meant?

To me, Ashley seems pretty comfortable with his sexuality, and just seemed to be dodging Rachid's questions because he found them too personal (he does ask him how he'd feel about it, too), but then that comment (and, albeit less so, the references to taking the p*ss)... I don't know... in your opinion, is it just the personal nature?

I took it to mean that he's 'out' as in, openly gay, but he doesn't let his sexuality define him. I can't remember exactly what Rachid was saying just before he said that but the nature of what he had been sayign made me think that Ashley meant he's not someone who's camp and brings the fact that he's gay into everything.
So I guess that's kind of along the same lines with what you say about the questions being too personal as well.

"Folks don't laugh so loud when you've got a grand in your back pocket."

reply

Yeah, that's how I see Ashley in general... he's gay but that's certainly not all of who he is. But that's why I found the comment strange, it went beyond him not wanting to bring his sexuality into everything, because someone else brought the subject up and he just seemed to want to dodge it. He suggested it was simply too personal by asking Rachid how he would feel if he asked him similar questions about women, but then "I'm out but I'm not out"... the phrasing suggests it was about his sexuality, more "just because you know I'm gay doesn't mean we have to discuss it", than "I don't want to discuss my sex life".
Hmm, I'm still unsure. I guess future episodes will tell.

The conversation goes like this:
Ashley says he doesn't like Rachid's questions, so Rachid says
"So you're not proud and all that? I thought you was "out"."
Ashley:
"There's out and there's out, alright?"

I agree with what you said, but I think he meant like, he is "out" meaning he doesn't hide he's gay, but he is not "out" so he doesn't go parading around that fact and talking about it to everyone. At least that was the feeling I had when I first saw the scene.

And I'm probably overthinking it now, but to me it implied that maybe he is not totally secure about being gay and talking about it yet. Or maybe he just have a reserved personality...

And on a different matter, anyone can tell me in which city they shot the series? I didn't want to start another board just for this question...

reply

There's a difference between not parading and outright avoiding, however, and it seemed to me that he was doing the latter. So it's exactly as you said, he's either reserved or not completely comfortable.
I kinda hope it isn't the latter because it's true that a character like Ashley is something we're not exactly used to seeing on our screens... someone who is homosexual without being a stereotype to some degree. I know that being uncomfortable wouldn't make him a stereotype or anything, it's just that people find him somewhat refreshing and if he is "proud", surely that can only be a good thing...
Saying that though, maybe that's going to be his 'arc'... Rachid apparently has a "murky past", and Stuart... well I guess Ashley has to have some sort of "issue" of his own.

As for where it's shot I can't be sure, but since it's set in Leeds I'd assume thereabouts.

There aere plenty of straight people who don't like discussing their sex lives. Just because Ashley is gay and doesn't, doesn't means he's not proud of who and what he is.

reply

I know and I (thought I had) expressed that. At first it seemed that he simply didn't want to discuss it, but then why were the comments about being "out" relevant at all? It certainly insinuates it has something to do with his sexuality, too.
