No series 2

So sad to read that Sirens wasn't picked up for a second series. Such a shame, too. It was such a great show! Here is a link to the story:

Of course, NBC is already working on a remake...typical. Why don't we they just air the original instead of ripping it off?

reply

That's exactly what I was thinking, that C4 are probably going for the easier money of royalties from the American version or whatever. Never did get why there's even a need for an American version for any British show. It's not like it's even in a different language, FFS!

Am I the only one excited about this?
Maybe if it gets picked up in the US, it will get more than 6 episodes.

reply

They should still do the decent thing and air the original six episodes first, rather than remake them. And they should admit they are too broke to hire people to come up with original ideas.

I think if they want more, they should simply fund the previous UK team to do it for them. That respects the creativity that made the show, the citizens of the UK who do actually speak English after all, and citizens of the USA who like UK accents in every other TV context and this should be no exception.

I know it's long since you wrote the above but, I'm from the US and absolutely LOVE British & some Australian & New Zealand television. Canadian, too. It's great to have the internet and be able to discover all these treasures. My first experience was Doctor Who in the 1970's and then occasional shows on Public Broadcast networks. Now that I have access to so many online I comb through everything I can get my hands on!

Another great thing about the internet is now you can go to various websites and look up expressions and slang so you get the full meaning of a conversation but unfortunately, too many of my countrymen don't put the effort in. That's a real shame for them because they lose out on amazing creative works like this show. Even before you could get the info at your fingertips, if people paid attention to the context they would pick up the meaning. I did.

To wrap up my sentiments on this show, it is really a great work in most every aspect and I'm sorry that there are only these 6 episodes. Whatever the US puts out will surely be sub-par. For myself, I'm really grateful for this day and age when I can enjoy all the quality efforts from around the globe and hopefully the craft will be made better for everyone by the collaboration. Truly, these UK writers, directors, actors, etc. should be recognized and rewarded for their contributions but reality doesn't work fairly for many of those in the creative arts of all skills and levels. Marvellous entertainment and (in some shows) education in all these countries!!

And now that it's almost here, we can all be disgusted.
The trailer gave me the impression of a standard stupid comedy compared to the Sirens UK (can't believe I have to add that now)who may have been a comedy but with strong drama element and truly complex character.
So I will watch the pilot, but with an apprehension level off the chart.

Its not a rip off of the series if it is bought as a specific remake; it happens all over the world. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't Law and Order UK came from the long running American Law and Order which is largely popular in both countries and so far the American Sirens has gained a lot of popularity.

Just read this.. what a shame!

I know :(

I'm really sad - it was such an enjoyable show with so much potential.

Rhys Thomas apparently said something on Twitter along the lines of 'at least it finished while it was ahead', which is true I guess, but Sirens didn't feel like a finished story to me. There was still so much to sort out for all four of the main characters (I count Maxine as a main) - it's a real shame we'll never get to see where it was going.

Also, the real kicker is Channel 4 have recently announced which shows they are recommissioning, and two of them in the same genre as Sirens (comedy/drama) are Fresh Meat and Beaver Falls.

Fresh Meat, in my opinion, wasn't as good as Sirens. It's laughs were hit and miss, you could see them coming a mile off, and having gone through that set-up myself, the tone was a little off for me.

As for Beaver Falls, I haven't watched it, but the trailers looked abysmal, and I heard mixed reviews, although whether good or bad none of them seemed to be clamouring for a follow up season and seemed satisfied that the story was finished. So why has it been recommissioned?!

reply

I liked Fresh Meat. It's strengths weren't the laughs as much as the plot arc and character development. It got quite serious towards the end. Reminds me of my time in a student house. It starts off all fun and having a laugh, then you all get to know each other and people fall out, leave, etc...

But the three core actors in Sirens were excellent. It got ignored by many I think so they took the ratings at face value and did a Fox on us. I think it was marketed by C4 as a comedy like Phone Shop....which it clearly wasn't. C4 *beep* that one up royally. They had no idea how to sell it. Frustrating for us, must have been maddening for the creators and cast.

I am so sad that there will no season 2
What is more horrifying it will remade by NBC .It will completely ruin the original
It will be so lame and tame .Specially Ashley storyline

yes, I don't think I'd like to see the US version, much as I like US shows and I liked this. I think this was such a charming show, so well written, gritty, funny and with British dry humour that I can't see it translating well.

Such a shame Channel 4 again wasted the set up of a show just to ditch after 6 episodes. I try not to watch Channel 4 now as they keep doing this.

I know this would never happen, but can't NBC pick it up and help funding it, instead of just rebooting the entire thing?

If this were to happen, I'd be so happy, but I really doubt it. For whatever reason, American TV executives seem to think no British show can succeed as is when screened in the US and there's a crucial need for them to be re-made.

which is odd, since I understand that the shows on BBCAmerica are doing pretty well, actually. Plus, there's the fact that plenty of British shows do well in TV markets far more culturally foreign to the Brits than the American one AND the fact that more often than not, American re-makes of foerign shows fail to capture the essence of the original show, so the whole thing ends up being a huge waste of time, effort and money. So why, WHY do they keep insisting on this course of action?

Hahaha we have a bit of a superiority complex, the "we can do it better" attitude ... which will occasionally work, but just as often not ... such as Skins US(worst remake ever ?). The original skins was/is fairly popular here in the states. I would REALLY like to see more BBC channels. Also, for many the accents can be a bit rough ... we have trouble distinguishing our own (ex: Boston's, Manhattan's)!! We also tend to gravitate towards shows requiring a complete lack of thought ... Jersey Shore, Teen Mom, Fox News, Dance Mom's, and Toddlers & Tiaras. It's terrible lol.

I doubt it.
But considering Madden was ******* in his latest *** series there might be a chance...but highly unlikely.

8.2 rating and no second series. :|

I must have been living under a rock. How did I not come across this show until now... I just saw *that* Richard Madden church scene on youtube, my jaw dropped and here i am. Truthfully i'm in it mostly for Madden but if that 2 min clip is anything to go by, it doesn't seem to be lacking in any department. Funny, smart, sexy, with a goodlooking cast, I can't believe it wasn't renewed for a second season.

I haven't been able to find any access to the show anywhere online that doesn't require an arm & a kidney to watch. Winter is coming, so if anyone could point me in the right direction i'd be forever grateful.

It's been 4 years since my post about this and I'm still really annoyed about it.
