The NASCAR race

Why did Dean drop out of the NASCAR race? The aggressive nature of the character had already been established, and this was his "big break." Did he suddenly realize he was over his head? It is a big jump from dirt tracks to NASCAR. Also, he'd been looking at footage of crashes and maybe he lost his nerve. In any case, I was a bit disappointed he didn't make a better effort.

It was probably more realistic. How many times do we see in the movies how the little guy makes good...and even takes the trophy (or the championship or whatever)? Realistically, the further up the "food chain" you go, the more likely you'll freeze-up, punk-out or melt-down. That goes for anything: NASCAR, baseball, acting, legal matters, etc.

I was actually kind of surprised at how grim the movie was. I was kind of expecting the usual father-son clash resolved with a feel-good ending.

Yes, Quaid played a cynical character layered with a sauce of bitterness.
