These two films are actually sooooo deep

I watched Volume I and II nearly in one go and now I'm overwhelmed. I feel like these films are so extremely underestimated. Anyone feel the same?

reply

I agree. The sex scenes are SO not the highlights of these films. Everyone dismisses it, calling it porn but it's so much more than that. It isn't for everyone, that's for sure.

reply

I agree! I watched them one night and it definitely left me thinking. People concentrate on the sexual aspect way too much. It's actually a very tragic story and told very well.

reply

Yeah I quite enjoyed it.

It was a film with a duality that explored humanist themes in the understanding of addiction and self-acceptance, and other times it was entirely misanthropic (like the end).

It was a complex film like all of Von Trier's works. I hate all the people who try to simplify the story with the same tired accusations of it simply being a shock-film from an enfant terrible auteur. Same crap from the same small-minded people, every single film.

reply

I agree! The thing is, it addresses certain relevant topics in society, which most people try not even to mention. It's even explicitly said in the film itself - tabooing a word or subject does not solve it. That's why I appreciate how Von Trier discusses not just the matters (e.g. sexuality, violence, death) themselves but the complexity and ambiguity in them, and also how they might be correlated which I think is even more important. And these are matters after all concern everyone, that's why it's nice to have someone bring them up, even though most people just feel uneasy being confronted with it and so say it's boring or it's porn (which clearly it is not, as it has the opposite format and intentions of porn)

reply

Not to mention the whole religious aspect, another classic concern of Von Trier's. He's a deeply twisted genius who communicates his disturbing and complex view of humanity as well as the very best directors.

reply

Absolutely. I basically think, and interviews with his crew and people like Skarsgard confirm that he is quite extraordinary and as good as Fincher etc. It's just that his stories are not for everyone-if they had been he could have masssive audience and mainstream acclaim.
