When dad says 'I don't wanna you die you are my baby'..

I find it such a moving scene - The dad looks so fragile and out of his control I feel like I can totally relate to his feeling: Even though the dad had been well-informed about the inevitable death of his daughter and projecting a everything-is-normal demeanour, he still acted like a helpless child when finally hearing the death announcement.

In contrast the boyfriend is long gone and off to college at that time I think...

reply

Agreed, that scene is heartbreaking.

they did well in expressing the complete and utter loss of control over the situation

i don`t think the boyfriend is long gone (he went on a day trip or weekend trip to check out the college and was coming back when she found out big the news) she dies before her friend gives birth (who was due in May if i remember) and he was looking at colleges for september

Yeah, that was a very sad scene.

Paddy Considine was superb in this film. He's a bit of an inspiration to me, since he's got Asperger's - just like me - yet he's got a pretty damn successful film career in spite of it.

Paddy Considine is a really good actor, and he's generally really quite good in this movie, but not in that scene

I am not one to cry at movies, but a tear rolled in this very convincing scene.

Paddy Considine acted superb in this movie. Very well he portrayed a man who found it difficult to come to terms with the fact he would eventually lose his daughter to cancer. He was only born 10 minutes away from where I live - Burton-Upon-Trent in Staffordshire, England. I was born in that town. I was also diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome as a child, which was hard for me to accept at one time. Paddy has achieved an awful lot in his movie career. It just shows that you can go on to achieve anything if you are determined and never give up :) x

I cried BUCKETS during this film, and that scene in particular had me sobbing. I'm glad I watched it alone because I would have had to leave the room. I'm a big baby when it comes to loss or separation.
It reminded me of the time I had to tell our then-6-year-old grandson that our dog was about to leave us, and I started crying, and he ended up comforting me.
God, i'm crying again. Time for some music in here!

I felt like crying too

reply

I never cried, but I could feel the emotion ( especially towards the end). Dakota did a superb job in this movie!

reply

How did you not cry? I just finished watching it for a second time and I cried a lot. I tried not too but the tears just kept coming lol.

The death of a child is the hardest pain a loving parent can face. It's bee over five years, and my grandmother still bawls her eyes out when we visit my mother's resting place. The actor who played a father did an excellent job portraying the raw pain and emotion of the situation.

No parent should ever have to lose their child. Paddy Considine depicted this situation really well. Even though his character had a troubled relationship with Tessa, he only reacted the way he did in certain situations because he loved his daughter. I think Tessa came to realise that. His character was able to show different layers of grief and how to deal with the scenario.
