Rusty. Why?

How is it that Rusty is able to come and go as he pleases in the squad room? He aggravates me SO much. I read a previous post which said they could write him out of the show and everything would go along as if he hadn't been here. I understand that he was a street kid but that doesn't give him leave to tamper with evidence, listen in on interviews, and basically pester Buzz until he investigate a case that was so incredibly painful. If he and Gabe were to get married, that would be the perfect way to shuffle him out.

I think Rusty is now a trainee for the DA's office. In his last vlog he said he's going to abandon his plans in becoming a journalist and rather pursuing a career in law. I figured he was dragged along by DDA Hobbs so that's why he was in electronics.

I don't care for his character at all either. I FF through the constant whining about his boyfriend or mom or whatever else he is talking about most of the time. I like Mike's character the best.

I didn't dislike him in the beginning. He had more of a story early on in my opinion. Now I think the writers don't know what to do with him. And he does whine a lot, he's beginning to get on my nerves.

Otherwise, I like the whole ensemble (but Provenza has a special place in my heart). They are the reason I watch the show, and why I jumped on board when The Closer ended.

I agree. I recently started watching, and it's completely unrealistic that he wanders around while the detectives are trying to solve a crime. He has no official capacity to be there. What were the writers thinking?

Just a point since I have just recently re-watched the entire run of both the Closer and Major Crimes. Rusty's presence was normal for the show. During the run of both series Brenda's parents, Buzz's sister, Flynn's sister, Flynn's ex-wife and current wife, Pope's wife, and possibly others all pretty much came into the murder room whenever they wished.

Gubbio above says he had no official capacity to be there. For the first couple of years of Major Crimes, Rusty had more reason to be there than most. He was under protective custody and needed to be guarded when he wasn't in school. Since Sharon was his legal guardian (and later mother), that is where they would bring him. It seems to me the writers were thinking rationally.

If you want to complain about Rusty in the murder room, you need to complain about everyone else. It might be interesting to do a survey of police stations and find out what the rules are. I would not be surprised to find out that while technically closed, family members often visit their loved ones at work with little trouble.

Yes, and I've wondered about that, too. However, in Rusty's case, it's more obvious. because he's there EVERY EPISODE -- or every day if you're are watching it in reruns.

Doesn't seem to me that a police station would be run that way. But, in this case, we have to take Rusty's story line into consideration.

However, I will say that the kid is a good actor with a meaty role to play.

I thought he did very well with the role.

Remember at one point early in the series he actually explains why he is in the station. "Because he has to be supervised 24/7.
