The overgrown city

My son raised this point - otherwise it might have passed me by. He asked why - in these post apocalyptic films - do they always show buildings overgrown with vegitation when buildings we see day by day that are never touched by anyone do not get vegitation on them?
The boy looked about 10 years old so we are saying that in just 10 years a large city would have vegitation growing up and over large buildings - really?
So does anyone have any real information on how long it might take for such extreme encroachment of nature to take place?

It doesn't take long at all. You can search Google for photos of abandoned cities, or sections of cities that have been abandoned, and many of them are striking pictures of nature reclaiming its territory.

Assuming the boy is 14 then there was nobody to take care of the landscape for 13 years and grass and weeds can grow a lot in a short amount of time. I am a farmer and when i grew tobacco, the rows would be clean this week and then rain for two weeks then the rows would be covered with weeds. So in 13+ years of no maintenance things would look this bad if not worse

agree and corroborate with previous posters. Nature is a tenacious be-otch! be afraid, the universe _IS_ actually out to get us. something we forget b/c we're "mostly" on top of the food chain. but it took us a loooong time to get here.
