Why is L getting so much love?

To me, it embodied the worst aspects of the "torture porn" movement of the last decade. I saw naked people juxtaposed over repellent imagery and contrived ultra-violence. It played with elements of a plot, but never fleshed them out. Which I realize is difficult, with only a few minutes. But D managed; shoot, E was worthless and yet it still had a plot of sorts.
Understand, I know that opinions are subjective. I just see a lot of people rating L as higher up or even tops, but I saw nothing redeeming about it. Can someone explain why you thought it was so great?

It was horribly shocking to me. I think that is what defines horror more than anything. To think human beings can do this to each other makes it unforgettable.

It would be interesting if that short segment was remade as a long feature film, maybe it would explain a few bits then!

A Serbian Film

Agreed.

I really enjoyed it. Absolutely grotesque, but without really showing you anything. It really makes you wonder what you would do if you found yourself in that situation, which is usually what really gets me in a horror film. Plus it had a decent amount of inventive and over-the-top gore. But I do agree it wasn't fleshed out very well, and I was expecting a more startling ending...

Fuicis, that comment just tempts me to use the Lord's Name in some exasperated way.

By far the best balance of creative/coherence of the bunch. I sorta draw the line at child abuse but L kept me entertained throughout. The same filmmakers have a segment in VHS 2, another fascinating short that easily could've been fleshed out into a feature. They're worthy of keeping an eye on.

I found this story fascinating. It raised many questions: How did the main character wind up in that situation? Where is he? How long did he have to recover between each round? If I was in his shoes, how long could I last? Who was the sexy lady, and why did she help the main character by flashing him during a difficult round? Is she a demon, or did the main character merely imagine what we saw with the camera acting as a lens through his eyes? Considering the circumstances of his demise, how did it feel to die as he did?

reply

Because it's one of the best in terms of actual "horror", it's kind of a Indonesian version of Hostel, except way more gross but well directed.

reply

That was by far the most disturbing.
