Dark Continent?

Please help me out on this: the movie takes place in the US (Detroit) and some country in the Middle East with a lot of desert - like Syria or Iraq maybe. So why is this movie called Dark Continent? Which continent is it referring to? I think Africa was once called something like this, but the Middle East? I doubt it stands for the US? It's very dramatic and doesn't make any sense to me.

The dark continent has always been a term to describe Sub-Saharan Africa, this takes place in the Middle East & Detroit. So they misfired on the title but why should that matter when they included hardly any monster action.
