Privileged white kids (with one Asian)

I'm twenty something, bohemian, and my parents pay for me to live in the city.

Cool. I give it one session.

lol i think the asian chick is a lesbian who has a black gf so they're really chucking all the minorities they can at this show....but for real this show just looks awful (i'd give it a chance if if were a comedy b/c MTV has actually been sucessful with those, but since its a drama....yea gonna be a *beep* disaster)

Is it really that hard not to be a dick on IMDB???

One of the guys is latino but they're actually all working and supporting themselves. They're just having trouble as recent college grads to find jobs in their fields so they have to take jobs their overqualified for. Unfortunately this is becoming very common in America.

Fritzi: Oh save the speech, rummy. She's *beep* I'm ready, and the goddamn show must go on.

Except this show fails in that regard in every way. As the New York Times review of this show specifically pointed out, it's not that these young people can't get the jobs they want because of the recession, they can't get the jobs they want because they are deluded and want impossible dream jobs.

The main character wants to be a novelist, one of the characters want to be a pop star, and another wants to be an underwear model.

These are 1% jobs they likely will not get no matter what the job market looks like. This show doesn't portray young adults looking for honest jobs, they're yuppies who want fame and riches. The characters on this show might as well apply to be on The Real World.

Which is why i totally relate to the show. I, too, am a recent college grad who majored in theatre, and want an impossible dream. So for all of those people like me this show is relatable.

With that being said I thought the show kind of dragged on. I kind of kept wondering if it would ever end. Perhaps the pacing will be better in future episodes.

It works like this... they make a show with a black girl (skins) and people complain so they say screw it.

My dish: Sophia's asian & Raviva isn't complete caucasian if you want to get technical. Plus Sophia's lesbo one night stand and Viva's boytoy later on this season.

Wow, oh wow. Are all americans as ... hmm how shall i say this "ethnicity focused" as the four posters above me, or is are these 4 an aberration.

God forbid POC want to be portrayed on television.

Fritzi: Oh save the speech, rummy. She's *beep* I'm ready, and the goddamn show must go on.

reply

I have no idea what you just said. Is POC some special acronym that legitimises being "Ethinicity Focused".

Maybe it is because I am not american but, the ethnicity of an actor/actress playing a character does not bother me. I am much more interested in whether i find the character him/her/itself compelling, and whether i like the storylines involved. Ethnicty of actors/actresses should be as important as their sexuality, (as in not bloody matter), unless it is an important part of the story.

reply

It means people of color. It's a very common acronym. And the ethnicity of a character does matter when most shows only use white actors and don't include poc actors.

Who cares about "diversity"? Diversity only leads to trouble and even more racism.

Yeah. Those people are just too uppity. They ought to learn their place and stop stirring up trouble.

reply

I'm not "ethnicity focused" and what does being American have to do with anything?

Nobody should be racist for: who they vote for, who they date, who they like music-wise, or what color they are... I simply was giving a very vague view into the OPs comment.

I'm gonna stop you right there. The original Skins and the US version for that matter had a decent mix of people. People in the US complained about it cause it was very racy and edgy. Frankly I feel like people just didn't want to believe things like that really happen so out came the cries of the "families" who wanted better. With the US version people complained because the show was trying to hard to be racy and edgy like it's UK counterpart and failed cause it couldn't stand on it's own. Sadly imitation isn't always the sincerest form of flattery. Don't compare the two, don't say it's a black thing.. it's not true...and now you know.

Cwluc is right, race/skin color was not why Skins failed in the US. Besides the Skins (US) reboot changing half the characters from the Skins (UK) original, yet still being almost a scene for scene copy, the UK version could take the chances it did because the UK has lower age limits for sexual consent & drinking than America does (16 vs 18 for sexual consent; 18 vs 21 to buy alcohol), which made the UK show less offensive in the eyes of conservatives or whomever may create a fuss.

Anyone with half a brain could have told the Skins (US) show-runners that a channel (MTV) with an average viewer age of 12/13 would have parents & advertisers flipping out once they saw the underage sex & drugs that made up Skins (UK & US). At the same time, Skins (US) would have been fine if they had changed it to a college setting instead of keeping the characters 17ish like the UK original, since college settings make drinking, drugging, and random sex completely OK in the eyes of America (even if the drinking is underage). *cuckoo, cuckoo*.

The U.S. version also ran into problems because anything that can be construed as underaged sex (even if it is fake, but using under 18s) can be prosecuted as child pornography by the government... which is why there were inquiries as to whether or not child pornography charges would be brought against the US show runners.

reply

I didn't think that was the reason it failed. I just saw people complained about that one thing.
