Really?! A Gibson

So Uncle Michael Shannon is dirt poor but somehow has in his possession a $4000 Les Paul. Dumb.

reply

Yeah......but he couldn't play it worth a Chit.
maybe that's why he's poor. Spent all his cash on his axe....:)

I grew up around poor people and it's not uncommon for things like that to happen.

Poor people realize that they will never go anywhere in life and will sometimes spend huge money on some dream object. It could be a car, extreme stereo systems, and stuff like that.

reply

Yep. You can go into the ghetto and see a nice car sitting in the yard of what looks like an over grown shack. Not uncommon for poor people to put money into things they probably shouldnt. They were in the lower class but not flat broke. Dude probably bought the guitar used anyway.

reply

Maybe that is why many of them are poor.

Alot of wrong information in this thread. The LP in the movie appears to be a Les Paul Custom, so depending on how old could be worth a few thousand dollars. The amp he had was an Epiphone. And even if he's really poor it's not out of realm of possibility he could've found it cheap, or acquired it in many different ways.

That's right. I live in one of the poorest cities in America and am constantly amazed at the number of Jaguars and Mercedes-Benz I see on the streets.

reply

Maybe he found it under the river

reply

Hahaha! LIke he said, some things are worth keeping. He obviously knew the value of this guitar.

reply

BAM! You stole my line....lol

reply

Theres many different levels of LPs, coulda been used, or whatever. But in real life its called a " movie". Dumb

reply

Except it wasn't a $4000 Gibson Les Paul, it was the cheaper Epiphone series. It said so right on the thing.

I remembered it being a Gibson as well and checked again. It was a Gibson LP, however there was an Epiphone amp in the same scene.

reply

Oh ok I guess I am mistaken

He got it from the river.

Remember just before the played the guitar, he was talking about how he found the ceiling fan in the river, people threw it away, and it actually was working well now, and the best thing in his house?

I assume he got the guitar the same way.

Yeah, and if you know you're going to die poor, why not have at least 1 nice thing in your life?

reply

I don't know guitars, but I do know they're big along the Delta. Elvis Presley and B.B. King are a couple who come to mind from the area and there are many, many more. Maybe a Les Paul wasn't always so expensive?

reply

Lucas51,
Do your research! Gibson make many Les Paul models,U.S made Les Pauls start at around $1000. The one he had looked pretty beaten up so he could have bought it second hand for a around $300. So don't just see a Gibson and immediately assume $4000,that's what is dumb.

reply

It's not that dumb. While you can get a cheap Gibson for 600 bucks, what he had in the movie was a lovely Gibson Les Paul Custom, which is the most expensive standard type of Les Paul. They start at around $2000 used and $4000 new. And the guitar in the movie honestly looked brand new, from what I could see (which it also probably was in real life - a clear product placement as it was). Definitely not even close to beaten up. So the research is yours to do, I'm afraid.

And knowing a bit about guitars, I also reacted to this scene. It seemed very unlikely and out of place. Great movie though.

reply

Yeah, I noticed that too. I said Wow, nice guitar.
