Juniper being played by Reese Witherspoon

Mud's girlfriend is first merely described in words, and marked by such words as supposedly being some kind of southern pearl. We are then made to wait almost half the movie in anticipation of seeing her. While at first taking Mud's description as hyperbole or even lie, the boys later catch a glimpse of her at the supermarket and are so in awe that they are sure it's the girl that Mud described. And then later on we the audience finally see her up close and personal, and it's .... Reese Witherspoon. lol

Ain't nothing wrong with how Reese looks. She's fine by a modest standard. But I was rather disappointed because I was expecting some kind of genuine beauty.

I think as the audience we were supposed to pick up that she is the girlfriend when the boys mention her hand and then the scene right after when it shows her close up and shows the bird tattoos. Wasn't too hard to figure out.

Also the movie dipicts Mud as a liar/bender of the truth and it's pretty common for anyone to speak highly of the one they love.

I honestly think this is the hottest I've ever seen Reese Witherspoon look. Have always thought she was a beautiful woman but man, here with the short shorts and somewhat revealing top, yeah, looked damn hot.

AMEN!!!

Gotta agree with that. The long, straight hair and shorts did it for me!

I thought Reece's performance playing Juniper against type was really good. Mud has an idealized vision of a someone who is really a bit of a tramp and that's the way Reece played her.

I thought it was very good casting. She does "stand out" as ideal in the inexperienced but eager minds of the boys, but doesn't look quite so to the more jaded of us. And the rest of the story is how Ellis grow/becomes more experienced/jaded so he can process concepts like Mud and Juniper differently.

A flawless supermodel would have wrecked that, as well as establish Mud as a truth teller which was against the point.

Plus, Reese still was hot, whether you particularly like her or not. Just, not even close to perfect. Which makes her a perfect Juniper.

Now, this is a signature gun, and that is an optical palm reader.

Not almost half the movie. Almost a quarter of the movie. 26 minutes. Big whoop.

Mud's description could still be hyperbole.

Of course they're in awe of her; they're 14 years old - they'd be in awe of any half-decent pretty lady, and as you say, Reese looks fine enough.

Besides, beauty is in the eye of the beholder; the whole point is how idealism about love can cloud your vision, so it's appropriate, no? 

It could well be hyperbole, but a good looking face is a good looking face, and she'd be damn perfect to a lot of people. Of course it's a very contentious and subjective topic to discuss, but she had all the hallmarks of somebody who Mud would fall at his feet for.
