Too Young To Die 11/10/15

Couldn't find anything on Google about 16-year old Gary Davis' tragic murder. It was a really sad story :/

I've been looking, too. Couldn't find anything. Do they change victims' names for the show?

reply

I'm thinking that must be why we couldn't find anything about it. I even looked up the lady, Heather Pailette/Paillette shown at the end of the episode, still nothing... 1991 Colorado Springs murder with Garys name also produced no results

I found an article on Newspaper Archives. The victim's name was Gary Day, not Davis. Kenda misspoke. He got the killer's name, Eugene Dean, correct, however.

The article is from the Gazette Telegraph, Sunday, August 29, 1993. It is titled "Anatomy of a Teen Murder " and includes photos of Gary Day, his mother Roberta Day, and shooter Gino (Eugene) Dean.

Great information! Thanks!

I updated to include the source.

Thanks again! If you have a link to the article that would be great as I couldn't locate it through Google.

NewspaperArchives.com doesn't permit links since it is a subscription service. There is a free 14 day trial, but I'd be wary if they ask for a credit card number --make sure you read the fine print. The only other thing I can think of is accessing the website through your local library. If you have a library card, you can often access (for free) many subscription databases from home by just by logging in to your library account.

What I remember from the article that was a bit different from the Homicide Hunter episode is that Gary Day had been in trouble with the police from the age 12. Most of his crimes were theft (including a stolen car, if my memory is correct). I don't think he committed any acts of violence, but he was a very troubled boy. However, his murder was completely unrelated to his previous run-ins with the law and he certainly didn't deserve to die.

Thank you. Very interesting but hard to believe there's only one source (and one that costs at that!) for this tragic story...

reply

Yeah, and it doesn't look like ANYTHING was written about it until 1993, 2 years after the murder. You would think that the shooting would have been mentioned in the local papers the next day.

Google news archives didn't turn up anything. Maybe the AP archives has something.

Gary was my friend. While he wasn't a choir boy...he was far from "very troubled". The issues he had and the questionable activities he took part in from time to time, were truly nothing more than you'd expect from a kid being raised by a single mother who had to work to support them both. Lack of supervision and limited access to resources (for positive activities that keep a kid busy) often breed trouble...and I can tell you - with first person knowledge- most of us out cruising Nevada Ave. on Fri and Sat nights- fell under this same umbrella. I had talked to Gary at the Hamburger Stand that night...In fact, I had left the parking lot about 15 minutes before he was murdered. Gary was my friend...and he didn't deserve to die the way he did.
