Are they changing the names of people?

I usually Google the names of the victims and perps on this show. More and more, I'm coming up with no results, except about the episode being aired. I should find something, especially since this info is usually public record. What gives?

You know what? I think so. I've seen the show before and usually only watch it with my mom. She's over for Christmas and I was watching the Donald Ott episode and googled the heck out of any name mentioned. Couldn't find anything. She says she has been able to google names and comes up with something... But they must have changed protocol.

What's interesting is a the end of the Donald Ott episode it said "photos courtesy of Danial B. Ott" which was intriguing to me. I googled that name and Daniel B. Ott was listed in an article as a witness to an unrelated murder...

Since actual crimes are public record, you should be able to find out the results of the crimes, I'm beginning to wonder if some of these stories are fiction.

There's only been 82 episodes so far and Kenda has solved over 380 homicide investigations, there's still about 300 possible episodes to go before the show runs out of material. I doubt the cases are fiction and wouldn't be surprised to learn the names were changed in some episodes.

Thank you! Joe Kenda 100% worked all of the cases he talks about. He does not read from script, he remembers a lot but he also has files to reflect on for details. I have played roles on Homicide Hunter and I have seen the script, his portion is not scripted. It will say something like "Kenda recalls the details of the events, it was a slow day at the office until......" so that the director and talent can keep up with the timeline as the cameras role.

As far as name changes, if the family agrees to share the story, they can ask to alter the name, like they may use that persons nickname, which is much harder to find or records, specially since the cases are old and much less publicized.

I made a post on the show's Facebook page hoping to get an answer on why the perps' names are apparently changed in some of the episodes.

reply

😃 Possibly... the names have been changed to protect the innocent. 😃

It's not a given that a murder, especially one from the 1970s or earlier, is recorded online. A lot of murders that have never been covered by national media or by a TV show, especially if they are cold cases or were quickly resolved, have little or no presence online.

There are murders I know for a fact occurred a few decades ago, that were quite sensational and where I even knew the victims, that have no online record whatsoever.

The Internet may appear to have all the information that's out there, but it's actually still just a small fraction of what's available. The reason why it's becoming harder to google these cases may simply be because they began the series with his more famous cases and are now delving into the more obscure ones.

I am sure some of the victims want privacy so that may be why the victim names change and as far as perps go it may be to protect the family of the accused I am sure some dumb asses would love to harass family members of the accused.

The names of victim and accused (whether convicted or not) are generally a matter of record, except under special circumstances such as one of them being a juvenile or (in some states) it's a sexual assault. And if you are an adult and convicted, well, too bad--the publication of that conviction is part of the whole process. We aren't a police state, so that means our legal process occurs in public.

The families of either victim or accused may choose not to participate in true crime shows like this, and frequently don't. That means you can't, say, use their likeness on the show. They also have a right not to have their personal contact information put out there. But they don't have a right to get the public record erased, just because one of their members was murdered or murdered someone else.

I thought it was kind of obvious that they are changing the names. You can't just go ahead and use people's names in a TV show...
