two queries

1. The soldiers told him they were serving near Lahavim, so how did they end up in a hotel in Eilat? IDF soldiers vacationing at an Eilat resort? Not hardly...

2. So Boaz was "blocked", but not Yossi? Yossi's the most blocked individual I've ever seen. What was party-boy Tom doing with him? What's he getting out of it?

Yossi's character was painful. Superb acting.

Why do you think that IDF soldiers can`t vacationing at an Eilat resort? They can go wherever they want. Dan Panorama isn`t very expensive so the soldiers can afford a weekend there.

reply

Never heard of it, but OK. How do you know they were at the Dan Panorama?

it was written on the hotel when Yossi drop them of :)

Hi :)

All IDF soldiers, even combatants/front liners/etc - get vacation time once in a while. They usually go to Eilat if they get a "regila" = a vacation of around 6 days from the yearly amount that every soldier deserves. (Sometimes part of it can be "on the house")

The word "Blocked" in Hebrew has a slang meaning of dumb/stupid.

Hope I cleared it up!

I live near Eilat and have visited friends vacationing at hotels there and never seen soldiers, but OK.

I actually thought *satum* meant exactly what the protagonist is: blocked, i.e., unable to let go, have fun, be spontaneous. But I can see it being used slangily in the sense of "stupid".

I can think of one logical reason for you not seeing soldiers:
Public transportation to Eilat is free only to soldiers serving nearby, who obviously can't go to the resorts.

The rest of us poor fellows have no use to driving five hours (or more) in the heat wearing our uniforms, so you simply couldn't distinguish who's a soldier and who's a citizen.

I just watched the movie with English subtitles, and they translate it as "dumb."

reply

Bad, bad translation.

The subtitles in general seemed like an oversimplification of the dialogue, and they were very difficult to read against a light background.
