At the point the 3 men come back to the jeep, (right before Corporal Haywood Updike tells Captain Donald O'Brian "I'm gonna make you vice-president") Updikes helmet is already off.
Then O'Brian walks to the monument.
In the next scene Updike has his helmet on and then he takes it off (again).

"Gar nicht so übel, du kleine Schlampe. Man sieht sich immer zweimal, Kleine."
