Any particular reason for having many of the female characters be black?

Not saying it's a bad thing or really a "thing" at all... but it did seem a bit out of place as well. And again, I don't mean out of place to be a bad thing, but rather that it was perhaps intentionally done for some sort of deeper meaning that I'm just not seeing. If nothing else, it's at least somewhat unusual as far as movies go.

Anyone have any interesting theories on the matter, or is it really just a non issue and they happened to be black because they just happened to be black?

reply

i was wondering this myself, i thought maybe there was going to be an explanation for it, but it never happened. i found it to be really, really weird that there were 2 older white men who had black wives and were both sort've "vigilantes" but with no connection. not because i'm not used to bi-racial couples (i'm white and my wife is black, so i love seeing bi-racial couples in movies), it's just very.. strange that there was no connection here. unless there is, and it's 2deep4me. i was puzzled, to say the least

Wasn't it the same woman who was with Tom Waits and Christopher Walken? That was how I saw it.

reply

No it wasn't the same women

reply

Oh, I just assumed it was her in different ages and that was why she looked different.

reply

I definitely thought it was the same woman, though I don't know for sure.

reply

It can't have been the same woman, Hans and Zachariah aren't far off the same age. It wouldn't make sense any way you looked at it.

reply

Are you serious? Zachariah's girl was younger became they were together WHEN THEY WERE YOUNGER. As evidenced by the fact Zachariah was at one point played by A YOUNGER ACTOR. In his youth. Young. Less aged. Longer ago. Not in the present.

Myra/ Maggie then meets Hans and they are together for a long time.
All the while, Zachariah is still searching, pining for his long lost love. The three of them are all roughly the same age.

Do you see now?

I think: The movie makes a point about bad female dialogue and characters, and also the poor black girl that gets no justice within the law appears twice. It's more like a red herring or poetic symmetry. Or a theme. Or about how random details make things feel connected when they are not.

reply

It was the same woman.

reply

The movie didn't specifically call it out, but it was so poignant for her to have been the same woman that was what I thought too.

Myra was played by Linda Bright Clay, and Maggie by Amanda Warren.

She aged, so she looked differently, and maybe she changed her name after breaking up with Tom Waits, and repented her ways and found peace with Christopher Walken. He was a proper, old time, Christian. I liked that she could have found some much needed closure with a man like that.

reply

One was dark skinned and the other one was a lighter complexion.

People who think they could have been the same are fools. Seriously, do Halle Berry and Lupita Nyongo look the same to you?

reply

they're the same character played by two different actresses did you seriously not understand that. Did you get confused when forest gump went from a small child to an adult tom hanks.

reply

NO, you are just a dumb POS. One's name is MYRA and the other is MAGGIE.

How can they be the same character? Was there a reference to both men being married to the same woman? The lighter one, Myra was married to the Polish guy (Hans) and the other, Maggie, was married to Zachariah and of a darker complexion.

Zachariah was pissed about Marty not leaving his message to Maggie at the end of his film. Han's wife Myra was killed by Woody Harrelson's character in the hospital.

Why the hell would Zachariah ask Marty to leave a message for a dead woman?

Next time you watch a film, actually pay attention before you go running your mouth off.

Why couldn't the two differently aged women (at different stages of life) be the same character?

Because of the different names??
She RAN AWAY, meaning she didn't want to be found. What's the FIRST THING you'd need to do if you didn't want to be found? CHANGE YOUR NAME! Preferably to one that starts with the same letter and has the same number of syllables, to allow you to get used to it quickly and easily.

Because one had a lighter skin colour than the other??
Which couldn't have anything to do with the fact that it would be VERY DIFFICULT to find two excellent black actresses who looked similar to each other, but were of two specific, different ages AND had the same exact skin shade, right?

Because Zachariah wouldn't ask Marty to leave a message for a dead woman?
His wife HAD RAN AWAY AND LEFT HIM. HE DIDN'T KNOW WHERE SHE WAS. Hence the favour he asked of writing a public message for her! So HOW THE HELL WOULD HE KNOW SHE HAD BEEN KILLED IF HE DIDN'T KNOW WHERE SHE WAS???

So, to quote something some thoughtless fool said somewhere:

Next time you watch a film, actually pay attention before you go running your mouth off.

"It's too late... Always has been, always will be...
Too late."

reply

While some of what you said may be true, but it doesn't change the fact that I am right and you all are wrong.

It's not that hard you idiot. One was dark and one was light. It is really that hard to find two black actresses of the same complexion? No, they do it all the time. No one is casting Keke Palmer to play a young Storm.

Also Did Maggie even have any lines? She was in a flashback I don't recall, but you all are so dumb. I don't think she did, so why would she need to be excellent?

There is something called a CASTING CALL where casting directors can be SUPER descriptive about what they want for a role. Light skin or mixed raced black women 60-70 vs. dark skin black women 30-40.

Hence, why the two women look COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. THEY ARE DIFFERENT PEOPLE.

A casting director wouldn't make the mistake. If they wanted one to be play a light skin black woman, they would get one. There isn't a shortage of light skinned black actresses.

Only a fool would confuse two OBVIOUSLY different looking black characters as the same person.

And since I wasn't talking to you, don't freaking quote me. Especially how many months later.

EDIT:

Also, it's been a while since I saw the film, but isn't this an aged Maggie and Zachariah?

How in the world could she be the same person as this?

I loved it when woody harrelson goes into the hospital thinking walken's wife would be white, asking Myra about a polish woman before slowly realising that "the Pollack married a *beep* that line alone made him even more despicable. so I thought that was an important scene that couldn't have happened if it weren't for Myra being african-american.

I can't remember the back story of Tom waits' partner off the top of my head unfortunately.

reply

Why does having black women or people in general have to be a "thing"? Seriously you don't hear people saying is there a deeper meaning to this all white cast? Maybe the women were exactly what the director was looking for. God forbid they won the audition's on their own merit.

reply

Agree 100%

reply

Agreed, and they certainly weren't the same characters.

reply

Watch the film again. You may realise they were.

No need to get your panties in a bunch, it's just a question. Quit looking for racism where it's not to be found, you'll live a happier life.

As I said initially, it just seemed different and I wondered if I had missed something in the context of the movie. White men with black women isn't extremely common, so I thought it could be pertinent.

Had everything been completely flipped around and it was an all black cast with 2 white men being the love interests of a specific black woman, I'd have asked the same question.

reply

The only person mentioning racism is you.

Janet! Donkeys!

Which goes to prove a hypothesis I have about some people's affection for racial slurs. Some people love to hear them. It's like they would hear it on a loop forever. I think it's excites them. I feel like its hackney piss poor writing. The "racist is the bad guy" is a formula that has been overused. It wasn't necessary to the story. The story was brilliant in parts but it lacked total cohesiveness. The writer's lack of imagination in creating believable villain ruined this film for me. I was disappointed in this film at that point. Was there no other way to communicate his surprise at finding a black woman married a white man? I didn't find the Woody Harrelson character to be a bad ass. I mean he murdered a cancer survivor over a dog. Hardly a bad ass.

In response to the op the female characters had to be black to excuse their rape and murder. If the victims had been white the general public would have been jarred by their sudden demise/departure. It's a plot point. When the writer first hears the story from the nut ball about Zach, he assumed the raped victim was white. I was disturbed at the ease in which the color of the victim affected the story. I'm still not ready to believe that.

They're the same person, it seems by the comments myself and many other people come to that conclusion. She seemed way to cool when woody walked in with a pistol she seemed like the same pychopath to me.

Hans' story is Han's story and Zach's story is Zach's story.

It was NOT hinted towards. You guys are imagining things.

Older Maggie:

If the writer meant for them to be the same person, the casting director would have done a better job at casting them to look alike. Skin tone, height, hairstyle/texture, etc. He obviously didn't, so it leads me to believe you all may have some problem with two different black females having a significant character/backstory in a film. One is fine, but TWO?! So they must be the same person.

I really don't get it. I never once thought they were the same while watching the film.

At the end, they make a big deal of Marty forgetting to leave a message for Maggie at the end of his film. Zachariah calls Marty to let him know he is coming for him.
If Myra (who is dead) is also Maggie (who should have got the message), then how idiotic would it be (in terms of storytelling/plot) for Marty to get killed for not remembering to leave a message for a woman who is now dead? I mean yeah the film is dark, but if this were the case there would not be just hints, but an ACTUAL reveal to make us go "oh sh**, he's getting/got killed for nothing!"

1. Marty didn't know they were the same person, nobody bloody knew

Marty is a goddamn character. I don't give a crap. I meant for US! The movie/writer would have done a better job at revealing they were the same person so we could have that revelation.

Myra being Maggie doesn't work if there is no reveal to the audience. They would have had to reveal that Maggie and Myra were one in the same, instead having people think "well maybe..." "perhaps..." "if you squint...they might be..."

then what the hell was the point of having such an important backstory for Zach's wife, and constatly come back to it throughout the movie

So we wouldn't forget and the ending would work.

on another note, you are telling me there's 2 psycho black girls having married white men?

Yes.

Also was Myra even a psychopath in the story? I don't remember what she did. Yeah, she stalked the guy, but Hans was the one who cut his own throat.

Also wasn't Maggie aged when she left Zach? Like 50 plus. Would she somehow have gotten to Hans in enough time to have a kid, then stalk her killer for decades more.
