Why was she standing guard at her son's bedroom?

It creeped me out. Mother choking son's life usually turns him gay.

bcause her first son died choking and that's why she was protecting this one , i guess

It sounded like the other son choked to death because neither parent was watching him closely, so she was going to watch her other son like a hawk to hopefully ensure he wouldn't meet a similar fate.

I thought it was tenderly sweet. She wanted to be there in case he needed her, and she wanted to be close to him. I didn't see it as obsessive.

Yes, she ran away as soon as he made a sound so he wouldn't know she had been there. But I agree with you that I was thinking he was going to be gay. I really expcted at first that that was where all the stuff with the older writer/surfer was going. And the mom almost seemed to be pushing gayness talking about Gore Vidal and all. But I was glad there was a recent Hollywood film that didn't feel it had to go there.

People don't "turn gay". They either are or they aren't. They may "appear" to be straight, and to have "turned gay", but, it is just an illusion they live until they either feel comfortable coming out, or until self-acceptance and self-awareness kicks in. It's a biological make-up not a choice. Who would choose to be subjected to the harshness, violence, bigotry and hatred?

While life experience might confuse someone, or cause certain types of behaviors or beliefs, the underlying biological make-up and urges are the true definers. (I have a close friend that is always being mistaken for gay because his appearance, activities, and mannerisms are not "typically male". But he has no reason to lie to the people that love and accept him and he is as hetero as they come.)
