Did everyone one forget about this feature. It's a quick way to end cyber bullying. If there's any ways that wouldn't work please explain that to me.

Yeah but couldn't you just deactivate your account?

I totally understand what you're saying, but you're both ignoring the biggest factor in cyberbullying... the fact that you don't even have to have an account to be a victim. As a middle school educator, I feel this is the biggest problem affecting our youth today (at least in my area). Any student can post anything about anyone else on any of their friends' walls. Middle schoolers/most teenagers don't have the maturity to ignore things like this and it saturates their lives.

For example: You don't have an account, but your boyfriend/girlfriend does. I send him/her a message and say I heard that you are texting someone else. Rather than taking your word for it, a typical middle school student would believe this lie and break up with you. You, in turn, are miserable and think your life is over because of this incident. Or, what if someone spread rumors online that you were gay, cutting yourself, have a crush on someone, etc... these are things that really get to kids and cause them to act irrationally.

These situations lead to violence and, in some cases, suicide. It's truly an epidemic. I'm thankful that ABC Family is addressing this terrible problem facing our children in today's technological and seemingly parent-less world.

this movie sounds like a big strawman full of inaccuracies about real cyberbullying. its IMPOSSIBLE to hack someones facebook or youtube. what they do is phish the account, i.e. extorting the users login credentials like sending them false e-mails asking for their password. there is no hacking involved.

no real computer hacker would waste their time hacking some dumb teenager's computer just to defile her profile.

AND KIDS SHOULDNT EVEN USE FACEBOOK. im not letting my kid have any social networking account until i know he or she is old enough to understand the internet.

reply

this is not even remotely true.

reply

It is possible to hack facebook and youtube accounts. My friend and cousin facebook got hack.

did you even see the movie?her little brother hacked her account bcus he knew her old password...

reply

Knowing someone's password does not constitute hacking, what a completely vapid comment. I'm so tired of idiots who believe they "hacked" someone when they are in possession of the details needed to log in to the account. If he had installed a RAT on her computer and keylogged her password THAT would be hacking. Sorry did I use confusing terms? I thought so, because all you kids think you know about computers because you are able to use Facebook. Get the f out of here.

reply

Have you heard of social engineering? No of course not, you just wanted to prove how superior you are over the internet and try to attack someone over the most trivial of things...There are many meanings and methods to "hacking" and to quibble such an arbitrary usage shows me that you are either trolling or a very angry person...seek help

reply

Yeah, I guess my comment was a bit off the mark.

Pretty ironic however that you try to call me out for my "superior" attitude but throw it out the window by making a snarky comment implying I'm mentally ill, that's really mature of you. Are people with mental illnesses inferior to you? What if I do have a disorder? Also calling me in a troll is such a vapid, fleeting attempt to discredit me. You really are pathetic and should be ashamed that you use mental illness as an insult.

Feel free to rebut telling me I have downs syndrome or something, because that is clearly the kind of route you intolerant cretins take to undermine a stranger on the internet.

reply

How in the heck do you get that I called you mentally ill from my comment?...That is now twice where you are reaching for inflammatory intent and tried to attack me...I said you sound angry and you may need help, needing help doesn't make someone mentally ill, it just means they are having trouble dealing with their problems...I suspected you of trolling, because you keep trying to make accusatory arguments when there was no basis for one to begin with.

reply

Nice back-pedalling. I wonder what you thought you meant when you told me to "seek help".

Here is a reference before you try and discredit me further by ignoring your malicious comments: http://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/seek+professional+help

reply

Several people need and shook professional help...also you keep deeming that )as if it were the case, IT ISNT) the someone who needs help is crazy or retarded, this is not the case...Go to college and read a few course before you start ranting about things that are way off track

reply

Just accept that you were wrong and I was mildly rude in my original comment.

reply

you're missing the very simple point of the movie and just nitpicking

reply

Either way, that's the bully getting what he wants. This person should have to change their life and not partake in something as common as facebook because somebody can't NOT be a bully? No. You don't just lie down and take it. That's bs.

reply

n ahhh this movie is about the change password feature

reply

whats even worse is that there is really no way to prove that it wasn't you since the cyberbully is using your account. it can really damage your life and hurt other people in your life too.

reply

it's obvious if it isn't you. if the people weren't too stupid they could quickly find a solution rather than do some pointless crying about it.

For one, put your *beep* on private so only your friends see it.
Two, if a friend turns into a raging bitch, unfriend them.
Three, BLOCK FEATURE.
Four, if people start a rumor about you, ignore it, deny it, or pretend you've never heard of it. "Omg, I heard a rumor that you're pregnant!" "Really? That's news to me./I must be the next Holy Mary because I'm still a virgin./Maybe they should stop projecting their worries on me." Seriously, get creative.
Five, delete profile. You're not missing much.
Six, report them. Harassing you online? Screen cap and send a report. Harassing you offline? Get evidence and report them to the cops.

reply

lets point some faults here. some stuff like friends only does only go so far.
two you still be hearing from them at school or another way
three they can be a new account
four people handle things diffrently. Its easier to say what you say they do what you say as every has diffrent ways to handle there emotion.

not everyone can get creative and you be putting oil into the fire even more doing that.

five what about the other friends you have made? no that not the case with most people.

report them most sites do nothing. not everyone knows how to use those tools.
not all cops will do stuff.

korn people commenting think first.

reply

Right, or you could just send an e-mail to the admin telling them what happened and they could delete the account for you. People need to stop being so sensitive now a days. You can't say the wrong thing or someone will cry, get over yourself. Bullying has been around forever and cyber bullying is just a new way to do it. People need to grow balls and grow up, if you are gonna kill yourself over someone breaking up with your or calling you names then you have problems.

reply

first matt it does not have anything to be so sesitve its people like you are making it worst by acting like were all whips. that not the case the point is people can still harrased you online or at school or at the bus at any point of your life. it WONT STOP THAT EASILY. no people like you need to grow baLLS AND LEARN TO HANDLE WHATS GOING ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! your the one who has no balls to do something your the one who is trying to pretend it does not exist people like you would be better off not commenting here.

Let me guess, you can read. Great! Now why don't you take your fist and sit on it.

reply

Actually it is about being oversensitive. Once you react to what the cyberbully is saying, you are playing right into his/her hands. That's what the cyberbully wants from you, to react. On one hand you can react like "OMG she posted I'm pregnant, now everybody thinks I'm pregnant, my life is over". On the other hand you can be like "Meh who cares, people aren't so naive to believe what she is posting. I have my real friends by my side and that's all that matters".

I understand teens are impressionable and these things do affect them. The parents have an active role to play here and it was good to see the mum in the movie doing what she could to protect her daughter.

That was a great comeback.

only trying to match your AMAZING one about dogs and peanut butter...

reply

It works. I'm just annoyed when people block each other for stupid reasons...

Also, by definition, hacking isn't just going on someone's profile. It's accessing their profile by breaking the security laws of the website and going on their account without even knowing their password. If you do go on with their password, it's not exactly hacking...more like impersonating, I suppose.

Or how about people act mature and not attack others online? That would be a sure fire way to end bullying. Don't bully people.

I'm not 17, that's just my favorite number. :]

reply

That's never gonna happen. You and I both know that. That's like asking why can't people just stop murdering one another? Some people just have it in them to be nasty towards others. Lindsay in the movie also had a father who matched her attitude and supported her bullying by claiming first amendment. You see how deep the problem goes.

It's not a perfect world. That's why its upto us to protect ourselves the best we can. Problems like cyberbullying can be easily avoided by staying away from these social network sites where nasty kids attack each other and spread false rumors. The girl fell victim because she was addicted to that site and her curiosity got the better of her. Why did she feel the urge to know everything Lindsay was saying behind her back? She knew Lindsay was a mean girl and would never say anything nice.

Physical bullying has been a scourge for centuries and we still can't eradicate it. The problem of cyberbullying pales in comparison. Just listen to ya parents kids. When your mum tells you to delete your profile, do it.

reply

I agree. It's called BLOCK. UNFRIEND. DELETE PROFILE.

reply

I know this is an old post, but Blocking someone or Deleting your account wont matter at all if everyone already hears the rumors. they can fill your page within a an hour with ridiculous things... once that starts going and people start talking about it, it's all over. You forget that the kid still has to go to school and people will look up and say, "HEY there she is.. thats the girl/boy who (insert rumor here)" Everyone starts laughing and picking fights with them and then it turns into bullying in the real world. Cyber bullying is just a way to bully someone when they aren't with you in person.
