This kid made the same claim. Now admits he made it up for attention.

Boy Says He Didn't Go To Heaven; Publisher Says It Will Pull Book

Nearly five years after it hit bestseller lists, a book that purported to be a six-year-old boy's story of visiting angels and heaven after suffering a bad car crash is being pulled from shelves. The young man at the center of The Boy Who Came Back from Heaven, Alex Malarkey, said this week that the story was all made up.

The book's publisher, Tyndale House, had promoted it as "a supernatural encounter that will give you new insights on Heaven, angels, and hearing the voice of God."

But Thursday, Tyndale House confirmed to NPR that it is taking "the book and all ancillary products out of print."

The decision to pull the book comes after Alex Malarkey wrote an open letter to retailer LifeWay and others who sell Christian books and religious materials. It was published this week on the Pulpit and Pen website.

"I did not die. I did not go to Heaven," Alex wrote. He continued, "I said I went to heaven because I thought it would get me attention. When I made the claims that I did, I had never read the Bible. People have profited from lies, and continue to. They should read the Bible, which is enough. The Bible is the only source of truth. Anything written by man cannot be infallible."

He concluded, "Those who market these materials must be called to repent and hold the Bible as enough."

Here are a few key background details of the story: Alex Malarkey was paralyzed at the age of 6 when he was in a car wreck. He then spent two months in a coma. He's now a teenager. The book lists him as a co-author along with his father, Kevin Malarkey.

Calling the book a "spiritual memoir," The Washington Post notes that it "became part of a popular genre of 'heavenly tourism,' which has been controversial among orthodox Christians."

Alex's parents are now divorced; he and his siblings live with his mother, Beth Malarkey, who has previously spoken out against the book (and last year, a movie) featuring her son. She has also said that profits from the book haven't been going to Alex.

Last spring, Beth Malarkey wrote a blog post stating, "Alex's name and identity are being used against his wishes (I have spoken before and posted about it that Alex has tried to publicly speak out against the book), on something that he is opposed to and knows to be in error according to the Bible."

She added, "I am fully aware of what it feels like to be pulled in. There are many who are scamming and using the Word of God to do it. They are good, especially if you are not digging into your Bible and truly studying it. They study their audience and even read 'success' books to try to build better and bigger ... 'ministries/businesses.' "

What are the odds that, with the help of his parents, the kid depicted in this movie made his story up too? Astronomical.

reply

was kinda expecting it, actually. Colton's conscience will probably catch up with him too

reply

You said it! Couldn't agree more with what you posted above. I came here just to check if this film was based on the book that has been discredited. Turns out this movie is based on a different book, but I have no doubt it is every bit as fictional as the other account (especially given the background of those involved).

reply

it was obvious from the very beginning.
i'm shocked anyone believed his claims

reply

God does speak to people. Maybe not this person but others.

Jesus is above all, my Lord and Savior. He died for me and I live my life for Him.

These people are called schizophrenics, and they sometimes end up killing their kids because God told them the kids had the devil in them.

reply

Wow, what a broad brush you paint with. The only faith I know of that beheads gays, rapes 9 year old girls, sells them into slavery, treats women like cattle, is Islam. But liberals are too much of wussies to insult them.

My suspicion is that this small paragraph tells more than every other paragraph in the article.

And makes me wonder if things would be handled differently if money was coming into their bank account from it.

reply

The kid's last name is "Malarkey"? Are you friggin serious?

Hahahahahahahahahahaha!

reply

No *beep* Sherlock. Every single one of you fantasies who went along with such an obviously false story are to blame for this fiasco. I really don't blame the kid, he was SIX. His parents and his fellow Christians exploited him for propaganda and money.

reply

Ok, so this was all a lie. But what about when science says that they found the missing link, but it turns out to be false? Atheists never mention stuff like that.

reply

There is no such thing as a missing link according to science. The idea of a missing link was used when evolution was thought to consist of only 24 stages 150 years ago. The missing link was stage 23 between ape (22) and human (24). Since then it has been shown evolution has thousands upon thousands of stages. The correct term to use scientifically is transition fossils which many have been discovered Dozens of human transition fossils have been found along with many other species. Also yes some have been false however that does not cancel out the ones that have been scientifically shown to be transition fossils unlike heaven that still has no evidence.

reply

But according to magazine covers and article, the missing link has been found. If not true, then they shouldn't say this. But I sort of understand because magazine need to sell.

What magazine covers and articles? Oh, right...

reply

Time, newsweek, etc.

Do you have any examples? No? Shocking.

reply

Examples: Look up old magazine covers and articles saying the missing link has been found.

I notice a distinct lack of you providing examples for your claims and instead telling me to do your work. IE: You're lying and you know it.

reply

Why would i be lying? I'm not the one who wrote the articles.

Here's from nation geographic: "MISSING LINK" FOUND: New Fossil Links Humans, Lemurs?

Anyway, look up lemur like fossil missing link. Look this up on youtube.

Doesn't confuse me any. I think they also do it that way to sell the magazine. For example, I don't know what magazine it was, but I was in line at the grocery store years back, and on the cover of this magazine there was something about Lucy on the cover and the missing link being found. Some people would say to themselves, "The missing link has been found. I need to buy this magazine." You know what I mean.

reply

MANY "missing links" have been found---evolution is a proven FACT---, and religious people never get a proper education about evolution, since they are so busy claiming it's false.

I can't believe how many gullible (and, if I may be frank, stupid) people there are out there that this kid was ever taken seriously, to the point where conservative programs hailed him as some sort of hero, and millions of dollars were actually spent to make his "true story" into a film. This is what happens when you believe in fairy tales, people.I have a feeling that you aren't going to be hearing too much about this recantation on Fox News and other conservative outlets.

Religion is a powerful thing. This isn't the last we've heard about this. I'm sure the religious right are beside themselves with grief right now.

You atheists don't believe in God, but you believe in evolution. I'd like to read about some of you not believing in either. But it's like, I'll believe and support evolution to get people's minds of God. Also you'll say that there is proof of evolution, but no proof of God. This is exactly what I mean. Why can't some of you atheists come out and say that there isn't proof of either?

Probably because there is evidence for evolution. Tons of it.

Reality disagrees with you.

reply

Lol, this doesn't prove or disprove anything.

reply

it does prove that regardless of their pious insistence, Christians, Christ-followers, Jesus-worshipers can be full of *beep* just like non-believers. and shamelessly make money bilking others with lies exploiting their sacred "God" too

reply

I just meant this doesn't prove there is a God, nor does it prove there isn't. There are people in this thread basically using this as proof that God doesn't exist.
