After the Dark- the Dichotomy of Logic and Art

It seems like a common trend among people that those who pursue science consider studying art or literature a waste of time, and those who pursue art consider science and logic to be inherently flawed. The later seems to be a major theme of the movie, which shows a society of pure logic failing, but a society of pure whim surviving.

The so called 'thought experiment's were basically wish fulfillment fantasies. Real life does not work that way. If you are purely logical, you cannot weed out art and literature. If you're a true artist, you cannot throw logic out of the window. That's the essence of life that they complete each other.

The problem with the professor was, I think, that he was not making rational and logical choices like he was claiming. His decisions were compromised by his feelings, but that's not all. I doubt he could make completely logical choices even if he was not emotionally shaken.

What the movie gets right, to me, is that it is better to have a more meaningful life than a long life devoid of color and taste, and the importance of art in life. What it gets wrong is the dismissal of logic, rationality and intellect. Logic does not by itself create a life devoid of meaning. Flawed logic does.

unfortunately thoug, they were not participating. they had the occasional choice, but 99% was simply dictated by the teacher.

We have all forgotten that logic is a tool, simply an aspect of something more. At the first gunshot this should have become obvious to everyone.
