Good movie, but... (Spoilers!)

...I wish the apocalypse had been real, and not just a "thought experiment".

I liked the idea of 20 kids picking and choosing would be safe, and I wanted to see them dealing with day-to-day life confined together for a year...but I guess that story's already been done.

Overall, it was an enjoyable movie. I loved the setting and the acting was excellent. The ending was a little confusing - Why did the teacher shoot himself? Or was that another "thought"? - but other than that, I'd recommend it, at least for a one-time watch!

I'm not sure what was with the ending, but at the end with what we saw, it seems that it showed clues as to what type of person he was looking for. It seems that Petra was playing both sides, as she was sleeping with the Teacher (Mr. Zimit), while she was sleeping with James. It also seems that not only were both of the boys in love with her, but she was in love with both.

So, the reality of this thought-experiment it was not just a thought-experiment for the end of the world (thus, the title change), but rather a thought-experiment towards that of the love between Petra and which boy she should choose.

The teacher, obviously, wanted Petra to choose him, but he also wanted to be sure of whether or not this would be her choice in the matter. Meanwhile, Petra realized at the end just who she would choose, which turned out to be James.

The teacher, at the end, describes the Greek translation of the word: "Apocalypse" into meaning: "To see what cannot be seen. Finding a way out of the dark." This is why the title was changed, because the title wanted to emphasize that this main plot was not about a thought-experiment about an apocalyptic world, but rather a thought-experiment between who Petra should choose to love.

In the end, Petra chose James because she loved him for all of his qualities -- his flaws, his perks, etc. Whereas, Mr. Zimit would've only loved her for her good qualities, not those of her bad qualities.

So, to sum it all up, this was not about a logical denomination, but rather about the Human element and what other choices and paths that life has to offer.

There are primarily two incidents in the movie that I find highly odd, and, ironically, found a solution during the writing of this.

1) During the third thought-experiment, Petra gave Mr. Zimit two bullets. Why not give him just one?

One bullet would be used to either kill himself or kill that of the person he hates most (James). But what significance does the second bullet have?

2) At the very end, Mr. Zimit pulls out a gun, fires one shot (off screen), then continues on his daily life, alone.

One of my theories is that this refers back to that of the significance of the second bullet, with the possibility that the first bullet was used to let out frustration, where the second bullet was actually used to kill either himself or James.

Wow! Thanks for the response.

It does make sense the way you describe it. That was kind of a twist ending, finding out that Petra and the teacher were involved.

I may have to watch it again to see if I can pick up on these clues the 2nd time around

Love what you wrote there.

I thought that there were two bullets because she knew that she was staying outside (which she would have baring the whole switch thing) and that she'd given him the two bullets so that it was one for him and one for her. Basically so that the two of them could spend those final moments together.
