Astronauts are only good for going into space? LOL

I have to wonder if the writer/filmmakers are ignorant, or if this was just supposed to illustrate the ignorance of these kids? Astronauts are usually holders of PhDs, soldiers or pilots, and trained over many, many disciplines. In other words, smarter than any four of the others put together, and experts in at least two or three of the other fields chosen (such as electrician). That's your go-to utility guy, but they act like this person has no value to their experiment outside a space capsule.

Never went to school? Don't remember how teams were usually picked during Phys Ed classes and which kids always ended up chosen last? And how do you think politics around the world still work today?

Also, this is what's going on in the real world today:

The filmmakers weren't ignorant, they were making a point.

Yea, that's the first thing I thought when they said that about the astronauts,
how they are trained(besides what they already know about the original profession) to fix just about anything with a roll of duct tape, lol.

i have to say though. the way they treated poet in first and second segment was priceless

reply

That was definitely fantastic. Didn't even give the poet the chance to tell us what was on the inside of his card.

That was the point, though, wasn't it? Several professions were overlooked because of bias. For example, a soldier does not just kill people. They are often specialized, perhaps even in radiation, as well as having great survival skills.

FFS, these intelligent people were stupid. The Astronaut is one example, the doctor with ebola another. I'd much prefer to have a doctor who MAY have ebola in my group. Firstly, Ebola is ONLY contageous if you're touching contaminated waste. She'd know that so could be careful. She could train others in basic first aid. The outbreak of a full case of ebola would be quite risky given the circumstances, but even then it's not a death sentence. With care there is even a good chance that only one person dies - the doctor, and even without care there is a 30% chance she'll live. Talk about throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

I put the blame on the writer/filmmakers. Even though the students were seniors in high school, they had a 5th grade understanding of the different professions - the astronaut one being the most laughable. So it's definitely caused by the ignorance of the writers.

Seriously - the senator. They said, well she's good at leadership. Senators are un-admirable human beings, either fully bought-and-paid-for-by-lobbyists or pandering to whatever the polls say. And she would have been Supreme Court justice in the future!? Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle.
