I agree. This film promises and never delivers. I think it *could* have thrown some curves which might have at least affected them in some significant way, but it just never does.

As an example: during the course of the movie, due to the experiment Chips (played by Daryl Sabara) changed from a sexually repressed "goody-two-shoes" science nerd into a sexually liberated guy who isn't that afraid of girls (or his inner hormonal instincts) anymore. Okay, he isn't perfect yet, he still has to learn some more to overcome his sexist ideas of what more purposes female astronauts and zoologists could serve (besides mating with the last "subfertile" man on Earth), but at least it's a start.

Other personal lessons were explored for several of the other students (albeit less explicitly/more subtly), I leave it to the attentive viewer to discover them him-/herself.

(Oh, and if they'd go home and forget about it/never have to think about it again, then it's not "homework"; this was a classroom exercise.)

"It will change them forever" is just a pretentious conceit like most of the movie.

Most of the students didn't even say anything during the experiment. Seriously, how can you have a group discussion with 20 people? 2-3 people are going to do 90% of the talking. Some other people are going to get a chance to say a line or two. And the smart ones will just keep quiet and countdown till the end of class.
