What a WHORE. Spoilers. What would u change?

I get the entire thing is the teacher trying to teach Petra to make the logical choice (him) instead of the emotional one (James), and that THAT was the whole point of the last scenario, choosing quality of life over quantity of years...

But bloody hell, what a stupid twist. Clever, sort of. But stupid. When she said that James didn't know about them (her and the teacher) means that she cheated on him with the teacher. I feel bad for James. He seems like a really nice guy and he's obviously head over heels for her; not to mention they make us feel MORE for the guy given that the teacher seems to be picking on him. I thought they'd go the "teacher sees potential in the unlikely student and through unconventional methods teaches him something important" but the teacher was just egotistical. I'm ok with the filmmakers deviating from the cliche above mentioned, but they didn't have to go that far.

As someone in the story said: Philosophy is not morality; and I think that explains the teacher.

If I could change one thing from the story it would be that the Teacher turns out to be Petra's father and he's worried about her future with James, who apparently isn't as smart as her. Maybe not as shocking, but clever enough and keeps intact the love the youngsters feel towards each other.

What would you change from the story???

PS: The only one who had it all figured out was Chipps. Talk about a perfect deserted island experience.

well, i would show the teacher get killed within the first 30 minutes in a pretty gruesome manner and then take the story from there. btw, i mean in the class room, not in the hypothetical scenario. maybe let him get stabbed by patra or something.

But where then does morality come from, if not underpinned by philosophy? I think it was Aristotle who said "I get this from philosophy, that I do without being commanded what others only do from fear of the law".

Your question is like asking "but where then does physics come from, if not underpinned by mathematics?". Mathematics is not physics. Something that is mathematically sound, isn't necessarily physically correct. Likewise, an issue that is philosophically sound (within the context of any arbitrary philosophy), isn't necessarily morally justified.

I would have a real atom bomb come and kill Petra and the teacher for being so unlikable.

Actually, Mr. Downey Jr., I think that your alternative ending would be even cornier. But each to their own. As a writer, challenged to craft an alternative ending to this movie, I would have an aerial shot of the kids filing out of the front door of the school and each going off in a different direction. A kind of inverse of the last shot of '12 Monkeys'.
