Does anyone have any idea what was happening at the end [SPOILERS]

By this I mean the ending on Animus Island. I understand (I think) that the Animus was for some reason seeking out Desmond and trying to delete him for wandering back into Ezio's memories. So was the whole "scheduled for deletion" thing the Animus attempting to boot Desmond back into his body?

The bit I really don't understand is where 16 gave him a big old hug, said "I'm saving you, idiot" and then vanished along with the rest of the island. What the hell was going on there? I hope they haven't killed him off permanently because A) this game built him up as very mysterious and just created a whole bunch more unanswered questions about him and B) He is the only interesting character in the modern sections of the game.

Subject 16 created a barrier around Desmond to prevent him from instant deletion. So in a way (and this sort of feels like The Matrix) he saved Desmond's mind from being deleted/Desmond brain dying.

Just bet the game, i think its something to do with the presence of the eden wer the past/future is all together like a www since desmond and ezio are of same blood and the dna/animus/memory sync meeting together and linking some sort of premanition (not sure if i spelt right or could make sense in xplaning it) but somehow msg has been sent to past n presence and ezio knew this during his communication to desmond that when the time is right it will b desmond -- it will all end with him no matter what ezio did n thats why ezio at the end said what he said and retired... desmond is lets just say modern prophet
