Nop. Every single Macross series can be watched separately. There is a storyline that bounds them together. But if have not seen any other series you can still enjoy and understand what you are watching.

The only stuff you will be missing will be occasionally homages. At some point in the series they will show Earth and the Macross (from the SDF MAcross series), but it will be like a 5 seconds footage. On other points of the series they will talk about Fire Bomber (from the Macross 7 series), but that is about two or three seconds here and there. Some characters are per se, homages to some original Macross characters (there is a girl that looks exactly like Misa Hayase from SDF Macross), but that does not matter at all to the story, its just little homages here and there for the old fans.
