Dude, after reading your post, and subsequently crapping my pants, I WILL indeed hafta give my crack a thorough washing...
And, although I wouldn't be QUITE as harsh as you were, I also have never had a real fondness for all things French (well, except maybe the 'kiss' if I can get a girl drugged and tied up in my basement first of course...)
I DID find the English subs and watch the film; it was okay. IF you are really into sort of Lovecraftian type stories, then this one is along this line. I think objectively compared to most generic crap out there, it truly is moderately creative and effective. But, kind of like you say, it's 'Frenchness' in tone puts one off the mood of what it COULD have been if it had been done with what at least WE might consider a more straight-forward way without the French flavour...
