What was with the grandson and fighting?

I don't understand what his gang fight had to add to the movie. Can someone explain?

reply

It was to clear any doubts what kind of guy he is and show that he is a lowlife who would have probably benefited from some harsh army time, Volodya being right all along and Elena being a stone-hearted bitch.

This and to show that what Elena did, in the end, was pointless and wrong (even more so than it already was, of course)

And just before the fighting started, he said to his friends that "His grandmas' on the case" in a very rude, and this is after all she has done to help HIM and become a better person!

To add, I think the director added the scene to release the tension that's built up to that point. The film was becoming just too tense and hard to watch.

reply

I thought that scene ADDED to the tension.

Seriously, I hardly see how a group of young teens fighting and engaging in acts of bullying and almost killing someone in the fighting process as well as even swearing at times etc as shown in a film including here can be seen as "relieving the tension".
