Separate bedrooms?

I was curious about how Elena and Vladimir had separate bedrooms. Is this just a cultural thing? Or was it somehow specific to the story of the movie?

It definitely fit th mood of the film and their relationship but I wonder if I'm just reading too much into that point.

I think it was significant as a symbol of their marriage. She was his nurse and house maid and only went to his bed when he wanted sex.

There are many married people around the world who have separate bedrooms.

But not many can afford it. Especially in country like Russia. This fact gives us information both about their marriage and social status (which is additionally important for their marriage).
