Reality of hypnosis

I know this is just a film and reality can be stretched but as a former hypnotherapist, it is certain that a person can't be hypnotized into doing something they normally wouldn't do, such as stealing a painting. It's also impossible to hypnotize someone into forgetting a person. It just can't happen. They can be helped with the anxiety, sadness and other issues associated with another, but that's all. Wouldn't many of us like to forget someone? Well, if hypnotherapists were able to do that, we'd all be wealthy!

point taken on the inability to erase memory, however, the movie indicates that Simon retained at least some recollection of his relationship with Elizabeth (he said so himself). that's why he put the painting in the car with the dead girl, instead of delivering it to Elizabeth as he had been instructed. the whole point of that was to setup a retribution scenario to punish Elizabeth for leaving him and for abusing her position as a supposed care giver.

as far as stealing the painting, what's to say that Simon wouldn't do that on his own, given the right circumstances?

we know that Simon's moral standards are far from ideal, that he has difficulty with self-control, and that he is driven by a very expensive addiction. it doesn't implausible for him to turn to theft as a means of solving his financial problems

He thought he killed Elizabeth, that's why he didn't deliver it, I think.

I think it is as well to remember that this kind of film is rather like CSI or Inception, in that it is science fiction.
