Poorly written or directed, one or the other.

The wife is annoying, the kids seem to be background characters most of the time, and there is no connection within this family. They just don't fit and it was miscast. 99.99% of the movie revolves around this guy, so we don't see them as a loving family, and that's what makes a horror film good when the horror starts. Skip it.

I hated the son, he was the only one I was glad to see killed. I actually like the movie but the end sucked and just killed it for me

Oh yeah. The wife sucked. Like you said, the whole family was mismatched. The casting director really screwed the pooch on this one, because I believe it could've been a much better movie with better actor choices, especially the insufferable wife.

I thought the wife was a real character given the circumstances - although how she had no clue about the history of the house is questionable. My problem was with the basic concept that true crime writers can fall on hard times. If a true crime writer has a smash hit best seller then they are pretty much set for life; it's name recognition in the genre. Note that they made Detective So and So a big fan of the writer and the other cops obviously knew his work. I just didn't buy that the family had no money, they had to downsize, they were now paying for two homes and he was a down-on-his-luck writer.
