The lights and there is a reason

I just posted this on another topic. He was a crime book writer. He studies crime. He didn't believe in the paranormal. The last thing you want to do is turn on the lights if you think someone is in your home, breaking in your home, etc... is because it gives away your location. It's common sense. He didn't believe in the paranormal until much later and in that case you would turn on your lights. There was no reason for him to turn on the lights until then for safety. Though him always having the flashlight on loses some credibility for him not turning the lights on due to a human prowler. However you can turn a flash light off and hide in the dark. Plus, as somoene else said he might not have wanted to wake the family.
