Did anyone else find François's transformation...(spo iler)

...from a closeted homosexual, who was scared of being exposed, to a brutal rapist, was a bit unbelievable?

Oh, I do so love the smell of honey on a man's lips!

You have to take in account people in films don't behave the way people do in real life. I suppose it was the inevitable resolution to his unrequited desires. What I found unbelievable was that a university student could not fight off a middle-aged man. Then if he had, it would have resulted in a different film. I can only imagine how terrifying it would be to be raped by a man you've known since childhood!

reply

Not unbelievable at all that he couldn't fight him off. The fact that a person is middle aged does not mean that they have no muscle mass.

It was believable to me. I don't think the typical rapist is how we view them: monsters all the time whose one and only thought is rape. I know there are a few like that, yes. However, I believe there are some like this man, everyday ordinary people, who had no intention of rape until he was actually doing it. I remember an episode of Law and Order in which a teenage guy raped a girl. She didn't do much fighting back, but she said no, and he was so horny he wasn't listening to her voice or body language and just took her.
Of course, with the main character in this movie, it was not much of a surprise, as he was going down the road of obsessiveness.

I can also believe he could overpower this 23 year old. Chris was young, but he didn't look particularly strong. Also, the main character, had served in the military, so he had strength and skills to make this kid succumb.

I bought it. Why not? When people snap, they snap. Homo/hetero has nothing to do with it. The fact that he'd been repressing his feelings for so long, on the other hand, does play into it. Besides, the whole film, for me, is an allegory, and allegories don't abide by the same rules of verisimilitude that more realistic psychological dramas abide by.

I didn't find it too unbelievable a transition and, in any case, it was meant to shock the viewer. I thought it showed quite well how long-term repression of something so fundamental as sexual identity - living day-to-day with that deep-seated frustration of your sexual desires and fantasises - can escalate into brutal acts.

reply

However unlikely I don't think it unbelievable under the circumstance that Francois was severely repressed and at the time of the rape under the influence of alcohol. More unbelievable for me was that he could have subdued that well built young guy.

Francois was an abuser alpha male who happened to like *beep* men.. Of the prettier kind.. Christian.
Francois does at xhis sex parties he does the current new bottom but it feels like something to do.. He wants the youth that he lost because he was chicken *beep* to face it.... Ie being gay ..

His queenly ploy with the car was predatoial.. He leads a bleak miserable life and when his natural charm does not make the young hottie fall in love with him he resents its and encases the rape scene in a money triangle..
Face it Francois .. Christian will never love you the way you want and you know getting only alpha male on. Him will get him to not only see u as a different plus despise you,

He went to the bedroom to entertain flirt with the gay uncle type who lured with money

Christian meant Francois favor and some curiouser for hi irrational behaviors that why he went to hotel... Then idiot rapes hip--- ass hole,, Francois lives in his shield go *beep* but I wonder how set Christian responds to the abuse.. *beep* karma comes back

At fiert i shared my voyeuritics ... but then when alpha male with gay tendencies goeas after christian and rapes him.. thats *beep* ;)r

Tho there are many Francois in the work... There are far more Christian who believe in a certain innocence and are hottie to tap it off.. The love.. But love very picky..

Francois had no brain power to accept that Chriian was not only a hottie but had such adroit love feelings :)

Maybe it's a problem with the translation from Afrikaans to English? He tells his doctor that he feels "irritated" all the time, and the doctor asks if he has lost control again. His wife and the doctor both ask him if he has drunk alcohol, and he denies it. Evidently, he has had some problems in the past with anger management related to alcohol? Maybe violence?

Here, we see him so immediately obsessed with Christian that he is ready to drive 15 hours to Cape Town just so he can see more of him. He stalks him at his university. He was maybe excited to see Christian hug the "coloured" guy--thinking that maybe Chris likes guys. He finds out that Chris wants an iPod, and so he buys one to give him as a courting gift.

And then he is so outraged, shaking with anger (or panic?) when he sees that his daughter has also driven the 15 hours to go to the beach with Christian. He's so angry he reports his car stolen?

And then he gets so drunk that he "has" to call Christian to come drive him to his hotel. He's no doubt pleased that Christian asks him for money--because he sees that as a sign that Chris feels a special connection to him. Turns out--it's just that he doesn't know anyone else with money.

All of this was crazy behavior--he was escalating out of control the whole time.
