is it based on a (half) true story ?

In January 1968, the 15th Submarine Squadron was part of the 29th Ballistic Missile Division at Rybachiy, commanded by Admiral Viktor A. Dygalo. K-129's commander was Captain First Rank V.I. Kobzar. K-129 carried hull number 722 on her final deployment during which she sank on 8 March 1968. The Soviet Navy deployed a huge flotilla of ships to search for her but never found her wreck

any ressemblance with that ?

K-129 is the true story it is based on, but K-129 was lost with all hands so whatever happened aboard her is known only to the Russians and maybe the Americans, so the movie is a fictionalised account of what happened, but with a fantastically mystical piece of technology thrown in to the mix just to add the *beep* factor.

The whole "minutes from Armageddon" line at the start of the movie may not have been untrue though, because the Russians sent just about everything after the K-129 leading many to believe that it was either trying to defect or be very very naughty with it's nuclear missile.

The fact the USS Thresher sunk mysteriously less than 2 months later and that both of these submarines are the ones no one wants to talk about kinda adds to the whole "what did the world come close to in 1968?" aspect.

Opinions are just onions with pi in them.
