I didn’t fully understand what happen in the crash that hunted the captain.
1. Why did the two boats colide?
2. Was he the Captain at the time? What was the Admiral role (if any) in the crash?
3. Brunei (the Osanz) mentions that he was also on the sub during the crash and that he was the one ordered to seal the hatch resulting in many casualties. What was he doing on that boat?

2. Yes, his first mission or so. No role.
3. He was a member of that boat. After the crash, he turned to KGB in order to save his career.

I can't see how anyone in the USSR armed forces would object to what he did when they used to march men through known mine fields. and sacrificed whole divisions in pointless frontal assault charges. The captain made the right move in sealing the hatch & everyone knew it.
