My boat will be in drydock for months

what happened to Ed Harris's boat just before the beginning of the film? The big "accident" they keep referring to happened YEARS earlier - on his first command. Long enough ago that Duchovny would have been a faceless yeoman.

Or is it typical for subs to be refitted/rehabbed/restocked/whatever for that long after a 2 month mission?

I mean, it's not like Ed Harris wrecked every boat he commanded, right? I mean, Duchovny can impugn him all he wants, but Harris was super competent and experienced by this point in his career (as evidenced by his actions).

just wondering. i didn't even think about this line until i noticed it in "memorable quotes".

It's not like the Red Navy, especially their submarine service, didn't have tons of previous mess ups. The navy wasn't a hotbed of super competence.

What are they doing? Why do they come here?
Some kind of instinct, memory, what they used to do.

Not sure if Russian subs do the same as USA but it's typical for USA subs to stay in port around 3 weeks after a complete deployment if no significant maintenance or upgrades are planned.
