shareyes... there was a Russian submarine. It had a captain. It was in the water. True story. Enough to claim "based on true events". The rest is fiction.

Probably this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K-129
0:16 you can see the sub in a port and imho it does resemble the Golf-II class.
0:41 a shot of a hatch seal -> Wiki: Missile explosion due to leaking hatch seal
Duchowny rogue KGB agent -> Wiki: Unauthorized missile launch - rogue attack on Pearl Harbor
Yes - the K-129.

Good call. The K-129 event is something almost nobody knows about, much like the Enigma recovery - by the British - which was sort-of portrayed in "U-571".
The Doctor is out. Far out.

I didn't mean to imply it is a secret. It's just not now well-known, and it gets even less well-known as the years pass.
Suspicious? Why? This doesn't seem the kind of thing people would lie about.

I am pretty sure it is a remake of the Korean film Phantom the Submarine, and not inspired by true events at all, thank God.
shareSynopsis:
"Korea's first nuclear submarine, the 'Phantom', is deployed on a reconaissance mission to investigate reports that Japan has developed nuclear capabilities. En route the submarine is taken over by rebellious officer 202, and officer 431 must stop his plans to launch a nuclear attack against Japan."
Well, aside that the plot of "Phantom" (2013) is set in a time when both U.S. and USSR had submarine nuclear capabilities and where aware of that, this plot is pretty similar to the rogue attack theory about K-129.
Nevertheless, the phrase "inspired by true events" leaves a lot of freedom for the storyline. So I'll speculate a bit: I think the phantom is the fictional name of the prototype mentioned in the trailer and is a reference to the D-4 missile system of the soviet navy. Historically this has not been a prototype anymore in 1968, but dramaturgically it would make perfect sense to wrap this into the story.
Just my 2 cents ;)

I always liked the Coen Brothers with Fargo, they just included it to add to the fiction
shareDo you just randomly pick a post to respond to and then randomly post whatever thought train zips through your head at the moment? Or does your post have anything to do with mine whatsoever?
WTF does the Coen Brothers or the film Fargo have to do with anything I just said?

A look at his posting history gives some explanation.
He looks to be a temporary escapee from the loony bin portion of the IMDb boards. (AKA the politics board)
I joined the Navy to see the world, only to discover the world is 2/3 water!
Must be inspired by the true events that the makers of this movie saw a bunch of other submarine movies.
Is this where the signature goes?
The poster is referring to the fact Fargo claims to be a "true story", although it is not. At least no parts of occurred in Fargo, or even ND.
shareThen he should have said so. As his post is written... He might as well have been asleep in the back seat of a car, woken up and shouted "Hedgehog" and drifted back to sleep again.
A beer for anyone who gets the totally random reference.
I joined the Navy to see the world, only to discover the world is 2/3 water!
Thanks, but I don't drink beer.
Vader: I find your lack of faith disturbing.
Tarkin: Enough of this! Vader, release him!
Well, i see that except war movies full of "Pew pew pew pew pew, 'Merica" your movie knowledge is kinda limited.
He speaks about Fargo because it was claimed for years that the movie was based on true events while it is not true, it was just a promotional tool.

In the trailer William Fichtner says,"they are putting 86 lives in danger."
The Golf II Soviet era sub holds 80-90 sailors.
A Golf II sub (K-129)went missing under unknown circumstances and its mission(still unknown)called for radio silence. Orders were finally given to the sub to report in by radio...this never happened and the Soviets began a mass search and rescue operation in the Pacific. The CIA found the wreckage and actually began building a massive ship to raise the sub and transport it inside the ship in secret...very James Bondish. I agree with an earlier poster that this is the telling of a story leading up to the foundering of the K-129.

I know little about the movie, but could it be based on the Secrets of the Dead episode, "The Man Who Saved the World," set during the Cuban Missile Crisis (also on IMDB)?

The Soviet/Russian submarine service was/is a litany of disasters and near disasters and there's plenty of scope for deriving film plots from it and the Soviet navy in general-'Hunt For...' was derived from the true events of a Soviet frigate that apparently attempted to defect to the West or start a war with it depending on the interpetation of events.
'What is an Oprah?'-Teal'c.
It was inspired by a true story that was detailed in the book Red Rogue Star by Kenneth Sewell. He served as consultant on the movie.

Well, something happened on earth to humans.
The real story was a Neanderthal who couldn't find his bludgeon anymore, yet stumbled upon a blue flower. It was a Tuesday.
Then, a bit of, you know, artistic license here and there and BOOM: Phantom, based on true events.

It is completely real story, it happened at 1968 before ocupation of my countru by USSR, see K-129 Wikipedia and Project Jennifer
shareYes, I would highly recommend reading " Red Star Rogue" Its a great book and what I believe the movie was modeled after! Enjoy!!!
