Per the trailer - 'Inspired By True Events' ?

Anyone happen know what "true events" - actual Soviet sub, captain, mission, history, etc. - this film is based upon?

reply

yes... there was a Russian submarine. It had a captain. It was in the water. True story. Enough to claim "based on true events". The rest is fiction.

Probably this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K-129
0:16 you can see the sub in a port and imho it does resemble the Golf-II class.

reply

Yes - the K-129.

Good call. The K-129 event is something almost nobody knows about, much like the Enigma recovery - by the British - which was sort-of portrayed in "U-571".

I didn't mean to imply it is a secret. It's just not now well-known, and it gets even less well-known as the years pass.

Suspicious? Why? This doesn't seem the kind of thing people would lie about.

I am pretty sure it is a remake of the Korean film Phantom the Submarine, and not inspired by true events at all, thank God.

reply

Synopsis:
"Korea's first nuclear submarine, the 'Phantom', is deployed on a reconaissance mission to investigate reports that Japan has developed nuclear capabilities. En route the submarine is taken over by rebellious officer 202, and officer 431 must stop his plans to launch a nuclear attack against Japan."

Well, aside that the plot of "Phantom" (2013) is set in a time when both U.S. and USSR had submarine nuclear capabilities and where aware of that, this plot is pretty similar to the rogue attack theory about K-129.

Nevertheless, the phrase "inspired by true events" leaves a lot of freedom for the storyline. So I'll speculate a bit: I think the phantom is the fictional name of the prototype mentioned in the trailer and is a reference to the D-4 missile system of the soviet navy. Historically this has not been a prototype anymore in 1968, but dramaturgically it would make perfect sense to wrap this into the story.
Just my 2 cents ;)

LOL, At least someone seems to get it.

A lot of people cannot grasp the difference between "Based upon", and "Inspired by"

BASED UPON:
Tries to tell the actual story of a true event. usually with a lot of artistic license thrown in.
Example...
We Were Soldiers
Blackhawk Down.

Both showed the story of a true event, but there was a lot of artistic license in both.

INSPIRED BY:
Completely fictional story where the inspiration for creating the fictional story was a true event.
Examples...
Behind Enemy Lines; inspired by the real life shootdown and rescue of Air Force pilot Scott O'Grady.
U-571; inspired by the allies efforts to get a German Enigma machine.
Neither story tries to tell the true event, both films are completely fictional.

This Film, Phantom, does seem to be related to one particular theory behind the sinking of K-129, one not credited to be true by most in the know and more along the lines of a conspiracy theory than reality. This being the theory put forth in Red Star Rogue of a secret attempt to start a war between USA and China by faking a Chinese launch on Hawaii. K-129 was real and really did sink. But the reality of what caused her loss is unknown. The most likely theory is an explosion of a missile, most likely due to some fault or leaky hatch (as actually happened to K-219 Off Cape Hatteras, See: Dangerous Waters)

I always liked the Coen Brothers with Fargo, they just included it to add to the fiction

Do you just randomly pick a post to respond to and then randomly post whatever thought train zips through your head at the moment? Or does your post have anything to do with mine whatsoever?

WTF does the Coen Brothers or the film Fargo have to do with anything I just said?

A look at his posting history gives some explanation.
He looks to be a temporary escapee from the loony bin portion of the IMDb boards. (AKA the politics board)

Must be inspired by the true events that the makers of this movie saw a bunch of other submarine movies.

Is this where the signature goes?

reply

The poster is referring to the fact Fargo claims to be a "true story", although it is not. At least no parts of occurred in Fargo, or even ND.

reply

Then he should have said so. As his post is written... He might as well have been asleep in the back seat of a car, woken up and shouted "Hedgehog" and drifted back to sleep again.

A beer for anyone who gets the totally random reference.

Well, i see that except war movies full of "Pew pew pew pew pew, 'Merica" your movie knowledge is kinda limited.
He speaks about Fargo because it was claimed for years that the movie was based on true events while it is not true, it was just a promotional tool.

In the trailer William Fichtner says,"they are putting 86 lives in danger."

The Golf II Soviet era sub holds 80-90 sailors.
A Golf II sub (K-129)went missing under unknown circumstances and its mission(still unknown)called for radio silence. Orders were finally given to the sub to report in by radio...this never happened and the Soviets began a mass search and rescue operation in the Pacific. The CIA found the wreckage and actually began building a massive ship to raise the sub and transport it inside the ship in secret...very James Bondish. I agree with an earlier poster that this is the telling of a story leading up to the foundering of the K-129.

I know little about the movie, but could it be based on the Secrets of the Dead episode, "The Man Who Saved the World," set during the Cuban Missile Crisis (also on IMDB)?

The Soviet/Russian submarine service was/is a litany of disasters and near disasters and there's plenty of scope for deriving film plots from it and the Soviet navy in general-'Hunt For...' was derived from the true events of a Soviet frigate that apparently attempted to defect to the West or start a war with it depending on the interpetation of events.

It was inspired by a true story that was detailed in the book Red Rogue Star by Kenneth Sewell. He served as consultant on the movie.

That's what came to my mind when I saw the trailer. Certainly some of the events in the trailer seem to resemble events in the Secrets of the Dead episode. I wouldn't be surprised if it was based on that.

reply

Well, something happened on earth to humans.

The real story was a Neanderthal who couldn't find his bludgeon anymore, yet stumbled upon a blue flower. It was a Tuesday.

Then, a bit of, you know, artistic license here and there and BOOM: Phantom, based on true events.
