What was the alternitve? Them speaking in Russian with titles? For them to speak with a Russian accent would be stupid too because they were all Russian so they would not speak in English.

As far as the accents are concerned – We didn't ask the actors to use accents because we want the audience to forget that these are Soviet sailors and to simply see them as human beings under tremendous pressure. During the Cold War both Americans and Soviets were indoctrinated with fear to objectify each other. Part of the reason for this was to control and achieve a predictable, dependable outcome which was: When the order was given, you pushed the button that would trigger the end of the world. It wouldn't have been Washington or the Kremlin that would have pushed the button; it would have been ordinary men with families who had everything to lose. Saving the people you love most dearly is an instinct almost impossible to breach. Propaganda, indoctrination, believing a story is true, might just make it psychologically possible to justify your actions. This is one of the questions at the center of the film. That's what we want the audience to understand. These are ordinary men faced with unthinkable choices with a flawed, manipulated premise, (or at a minimum, an honest misunderstanding) informing their decisions. We don't want the characters to be dismissed or stigmatized because they have accents.

Also - Everyone in the film is Russian, therefore there was no need to differentiate between Russians and "others" by having the Russian characters speaking English with Russian accents.

It didn't work for me. I'd rather they speak with accents or speak Russian with subtitles.

There's a lot of talk about why the characters used the words "sir" and "gentlemen" as opposed to "comrades". But if they're using standard English, why bother?

Take a look at The Duellists (1977) directed by Ridley Scott. This one had Keith Carradine and Harvey Keitel as French officers in Napoleonic Europe, and no attempt at a French accent! I found that easier to take than the array of British actors cast in supporting roles - using their native English accents to portray French officers. This begs the question, Are those with English accents more French than the American accents?

Actually if the American actors did speak English with Russian accents then it might make it
more convincing.
As it is I could hardly believe that these were Soviet sailors on a Soviet sub.
If i didn't know anything about this movie and just happened to turn into it on my TV
it would have taken me awhile to realize that it was American actors portraying Soviet sailors.
Other than that I didn't find the acting in the movie very convincing at all.


It is difficult to free fools from the chains they revere.

It may be hard to believe, but russians do not speak to each other in english with russian accents, but in russian. Also french people do not speak to each other in english with french accents, but in french. OK, if you'd prefer reality for the sake of authenticiy, but I don't know how good your russian is.
