Why Is Nicolas Winding Refn's Name On The Poster???

He's not directing and it doesn't even say "from executive producer Nicolas Winding Refn". It's really misleading and kind of odd.

Surely fans of the director will be familiar with the original? (Or at very least, interested in watching something actually directed by the guy rather than an English language knock-off of his work?)

reply

It does say "Executive Producer" above his name.

yeh it's in a smaller font but it's there.

I'm not sure what you mean saying that Nicolas Winding Refn doesn't care. Sure, I mean he's probably pleased to be getting a paycheck (just like John Carpenter when his movies get remade), but my problem is that they couldn't sell the film on its own merits and had to put the director who DIDN'T direct this version in large letters on the poster in order to sell it.

For all I know, the actual movie could be okay. I think Richard Coyle is pretty cool (though I think he's more suited to comedy. I know him from "Coupling" and Terry Pratchett's "Going Postal".)

And the originals were good but not amazing.

I thought parts 2 and 3 in the trilogy were absolutely brilliant and represent some of Winding Refn's best work...

He wants to remake genre films like Maniac Cop or even the sci-fi Logan's Run. Then changes his mind.

Has he really changed his mind on those? Like with Guillermo Del Toro, he's got a lot of plans and not enough time, it seems to me.

It might make those who like the new version check out some of Refn's work, both the original and Valhalla Rising which barely got a release.

I guess. But coming onto the IMDB page and seeing Nicolas Winding Refn's name in big letters on the poster just irritated me, y'know? It's like it's misleading people.

But yeah, the idea of a remake isn't a bad thing in itself. Winding Refn gets some royalties and it puts attention on the original trilogy. Plus it could have even been a good film too. But to put Winding Refn's name on the poster annoyed me. If they put Carpenter's name on the Rob Zombie remake of "Halloween" that'd be similarly irritating.

I think seeing him name and getting excited - Then seeing the advert which looks quite cool in a sort of Enter the Void kind of way - But then coming here and seeing it getting a 5 puts you off it all! The original is pretty good though!

If John Carpenter had any involvement with a new movie whatsoever, which includes making the bad ass version of it along time ago first, they would still put his name somewhere on the new poster. I've never heard of Nicolas Winding Refn. Maybe he loaned the makers his name to put oh their posters because no one i've ever met knows who this guy is or talks about his movies. And also if his name is on anything at all he gets paid money by the studios. At least in the states.

"no one i've ever met knows who this guy is or talks about his movies"

So this is the first you've heard of Drive? Or of the Pusher trilogy, which was started almost 20 years ago?

I'd be ashamed if that were the case for me.

If Refn isn't already past his best years, he's the hottest action director in the biz.

I'm bugged by the false advertising also. I really enjoyed Drive, so when I saw his name on the poster, I assumed he directed it but couldn't find his name anywhere except on the full cast and credits page on here. When I saw the screenshot of the poster, I couldn't even see the tiny font above it, showing the marketing team's clear intent to mislead fans of him who know his name from a distance.

It's not hard to find out who directed a movie before you see it!

He was given an Executive Producer credit, but admitted in an interview to the Hollywood Reporter that he was barely around and only visited the set once. This film is Prieto's project not Refn's.

reply

I'm glad I ended up watching it because his name was attached I did the same for Only God Forgives.
