Don't know how this got such a low rating

En las afueras de la ciudad is the original spanish language film by Patricio Valladares, he is doing an english language version due out in 2014 starring Michael Biehn among others.
The story here is quite real. Fathers sexually abusing their daughters at very young ages, the daughters having children from rape, etc.
This is framed around the story of a group of drug dealers who have their operations deep in the forest.
2 daughters and a deformed son from a "familial" rape incident are confronted with extreme brutality as they try to survive in this environment. They in turn must use violent (and graphic) measures in order to live another day.

Having lived in South America for a few years I can tell you the twisted kind of macho male behavior portrayed in this film is widespread. Sure it exists just about everywhere else but Valladares does a superb job of showing the South American side in this film.

It's brutal, in your face, well paced filmmaking which works all the way through.
The story, the acting, the production and the effects are top notch, and one aspect of the effects which I'm not going to reveal here are particularly grisly and realistic.

I would have to be disagree and say this film is a confusing, disjointed mess, but then it would be somewhat unfair. I would watch, rewind, watch, rewind and I still cannot understand a single thing. I could not tell the daughters apart, as well as all of the other characters. I recognized the inbred son/sibling because of his messed up teeth and his constant Scooby Doo ghost like moaning. This is why I will give it a low rating. 1.

I thought this was a really good movie and I'm also confused by the low rating. I wouldn't expect it to have a high rating because the subject matter is so rough, but I thought this was a genuinely great film. IMO If you take the shock elements out of the movie it's still a quality film: it has suspense, a well told story, good acting, quality filmmaking, and a unique tone when compared to your average slasher film or exploitation film. Then again maybe my taste is just becoming more outside the mainstream of imdb, because this is the second movie I've seen in the past few months that I loved that has a rating in the 3s (the other being American Animal). I give it an 8.

Yeah I am VERY surprised that this film got a low rating because I was absolutely amazed by Siboney Lo and Carolina Escobar performance throughout the film since they did a lot of crazy sh*t and being brave enough to take on this role as well! This movie plot/story was pretty much straight forward and simple to understand thanks to the subtitles. Plus, this is another great foreign horror/thriller film that every horror/thriller fan needs to see! If anyone could watch and enjoy "Martyrs" then they can surely watch "Hidden in the Woods". However, I don't expect movie watchers that enjoyed transformers or some PG-13 scary movie to handle "hidden in the woods" movie since it will be too "Extreme" to them or too "disgusting" but you can't win them all. I suspect this film will gain more attention as the years go by since I never seen any marketing for this film until I saw the trailer on Amazon video store and decided to rent it as soon as I realized it was a foreign film. In the past 5-10 years I have seen tons of great horror/thriller foreign films and Hidden in the Woods is just another example of foreign movies doing what hollywood can't do. Besides, the remake for this foreign film is already coming out this year and we all know it will not be as crazy as the original foreign "Hidden in the woods" film. It's sad that the american remake of this film will gain more attention, make more money and most of all the people that end up seeing the remake will never realized that the film is a remake.
