Abortion

It's famously difficult (or impossible) to deal with the issue of abortions in films nowadays. If someone get's pregnant you can bet your lunch money they're going to keep the baby, regardless of how inappropriate it is. Or if an abortion has happened in the past it must have completely ruined your life. That seems to be what's going on with Gena's character. She had an abortion about 15 years ago and therefore she is now a waster, drug addict and completely dead inside?

She said that it had more to do with CLYDE not going to the clinic with her, which made her feel abandoned.

Never had one myself and STRONGLY against so fair warning this may offend...but I could see how murdering an innocent baby that you made with a man you love because you were too irresponsible to be having sex and didn't use protection could kind of get you down...

Yes, it is evident that views like yours are dominating in media and film but it would be, at least more interesting and healthy to at some point hear another view. There are plenty of people who have had abortions and not have it ruin their lives. Young girls are easily influenced and constantly being told that abortion is unthinkable and wrong will make life a lot more difficult if they through various circumstances find themselves with an unwanted pregnancy.

Oh wow.... healthy to hear the alternative view of the destroying of a human life.

Let's hope more young girls are easily influenced into the view of "don't kill an innocent human being".

You've got a warped mind, lillurr.

reply

Yes. Lets hope girls who have been abused or raped, or are carrying babies that could kill them (it's happened to people I know) are easily influenced into carrying a baby that they didn't choose to have and that could mentally scar them.

Oy vey. I know you won't see my point, which is that a woman is more than an incubator for a baby and has equal rights to a fetus that isn't even living yet, but I've made my point.

Btw, "Tim", as a man, I don't really think you should have too much say. You will NEVER understand what it's like to face what some girls and women face. You don't own someone else's reproductive organs.

reply

how else are you supposed to deal with killing an innocent, defenseless, human life? Applaud the action?

reply

I never really picked up the notion that the abortion "ruined" her life. It definitely seemed to be a dark moment in her past but I thought that came more from her being let down by Clyde at the time. Plus, although she used drugs, I don't think she came across as an addict.

reply

So in your opinion, a 15 year old child should be forced to have a child herself. Seems smart. No need to applaud, perhaps just save the judgement because it doesn't concern you.

Ugh pro-life people are the worst

Aw let them stay up on their high horses, they like it there. Some people just love the idea of having even more unwanted, unloved children in the world than there already are.

Disasters are just another star falling in my yard

"Some people just love the idea of having even more unwanted, unloved children in the world than there already are." That's not really what people want. Extreme pro abortionists can be as bad as extreme anti abortion believers.

I think that old fashioned values, which seem to be looked down upon today about marriage, not being promiscuous, "waiting" etc, could actually be *gasp* good ideas! that's an idea, actually having self control.

i know. such stuck up preachy sanctimonious people, much like a certain person on this thread and another on the religion/spirituality board. there are too many of those in the world

The film wasn't trying to say abortion ruins lives... It ruined their relationship, which deeply hurt Genny. I'm sure if Clyde had come to the clinic and they had worked it out as a couple, neither of them would be as messed up as they are when the movie takes place.

Hail to the king, baby.

reply

Way more movies need to have courage when it comes to the issue of abortion.
