Don't buy the negative hype on these boards ...

This movie is great! I thoroughly enjoyed it. There are plenty of ridiculous, mean-spirited antics, but there's much more to the movie than that. It's about lonely, damaged people wreaking havoc but finally coming together in the end. I could totally relate to these characters (even though I'm a guy), and had no problem rooting for them. Not everyone in the world is all nice and P.C., but we're all still human and deserve shot at redemption and happiness. And oh yeah, the movie is really funny too.

I agree. These are real people with real problems and unhealthy coping mechanisms. They're still friends who care about each other.

Most importantly, the film is hilarious.

Thanks for your feedback, way to protect the film. Here's what our writer Sam wrote about it,

"Bachelorette" is one of those rare, A.D.D.-afflicted comedies that succeed because of their flaws. The action is dippy and fleeting, and you may question why this quartet of groomsmen was ever friends, why the other bridesmaids let Regan curse and scream at them, why would-be shocking sequences such as an overdose on Xanax and forced bulimia are dismissed as fast as they arrive" (find the rest of the review on Screen Comment) Thanks for reading!

This movie is hilarious!!!

I agree that it was really fun. Though, I seem to be defending a lot of low-rent chick flicks lately. I can see how one might be unsatisfied if they paid $10 to see it in the theater, but the movie itself was enjoyable.

reply

I absolutely agree w the OP. The movie is HILARIOUS, plus it's completely real. It's exactly how I am with my BFFs and the other way around.

reply

Very surprisingly one of the best films of the year. Whenever it seemed to be falling into a movie stereotype it took a right turn and went somewhere unexpected. The girls were just shy of being too bad and unlikeable but managed to skirt that edge very well to come out on top in the end. Loved it.

I don't understand the hate either! I loved the movie and thought it was hilarious :)

I saw the movie and was totally and utterly disgusted by the open drug use, the fact that the so-called friends trashed the bride's dress and to be honest by their whole lack of empathy.

reply

Welcome to the real world... some people use drugs. Some people talk massive sh-t about their friends. Some people lack empathy. Life isn't really a movie, where you learn some life-altering lesson and completely change who you are/have been after one experience.

I liked that at the end of this movie, these women were basically the same, each only have a relatively small self-realization (Gena realizing her life isn't going how she wants it to, Katie realizing she isn't all that stupid and doesn't need to sleep with a guy for him to like her, and Reagan realizing she isn't better than Becky and that she has actually been a sh-tty friend to a person who has always been genuine to her). People don't just change overnight, and I'm glad the film didn't try to make us think they did.

reply

No, they don't change over night, but Becky's friends were never worthy of her friendship, and if they are anything like my friends, afterwards they will wish her a good marriage to her face and go back to acting like they are better than her.

And her wedding pictures are completely *beep* The ceremony was missing 3 bridesmaids and showed, her dress was stained, and she wasted money on her wedding coordinator who had no solutions to any problems.

Ugh, makes me angry about my own wedding. But yeah, it was an alright film. I laughed a couple times, and I definitely had a shocked and disgusted look on my face for the most part. Maybe if I couldn't relate to so many of the Becky's issues, I would be able to enjoy it better for what it was. I could never have a good attitude about all that at the end of the day. If she only knew how they ripped her dress making fun of her size, I can't imagine she'd forgive them.

I wanted to rate it a 6/10, but I will give it a 7/10 because I am biased.

Oh and the plot description on the top of the main page for this doesn't even suggest they are friends, and that's almost what it felt like, like they were dared to be there after being mere bullies in her life.

I had never heard of this movie and almost skipped it when it came on TV. I loved it. I don't understand how whatever studio made it let it fly under the radar. I loved Rebel Wilson as the vulnerable "straight man" and thought she did a great job. I always love Lizzie Kaplan's work and admire Kirsten Dunst's range - look at the difference between this role and her role in Eternal Sunshine. I loved that it was a really good, frenzied "romp," especially toward the end, because actresses don't often get to do that.

Yeah, another word to describe those people is "a**holes".
I thought the movie had a few moments and all in all was'nt terrible but honestly? I found it rather difficult to care about the rich, entitled, self-absorbed as well as self-pitying characters in this movie,
not to mention Isla Fisher's ridiculously obvious plastic boobs and K. Dunst's redefinition of hotness (if you define hot as old, greasy, tired and bloated)...
The screenplay had potential but the finished product ultimately fails on various levels.

I enjoyed it and recommended it to my girlfriends. There were parts that were slow and actions just too unbelievable (these girls were so mean how could they?!, lol) but overall it was entertaining.

reply

I almost didn't watch this movie but I gave in and enjoyed it. Not gonna sit here and try to explain because I will mess it up. I'm pretty sure this movie is more relatable than most will think it is.

reply

I enjoyed it too and I think it is really underrated.
It's funny but as you said it it's really about broken people who in the end finds comfort in their strong friendships.
I'm difficult when it comes to this type of comedy, most of the time I find the characters unlikeable or I think there is too much vulgarity. But in Bachelorette, I didn't feel that at all. Probably because the characters are quite deep for a comedy and the dialogues and scenes that could have been vulgar were not because they were actually for a purpose and not just for shock value. I would even say there is a positive message in this film.

What's totally baffling me in these reactions is why other films that really are gross are beloved by critics and fans

I wondered about that too.
I have the impression that it's because Bachelorette shows women who are very independent, openly take drugs and have one-night stands. I can't help thinking people wouldn't have found it vulgar if it had been guys instead of women. And believe me I'm not the type that sees sexism everywhere nor am I a feminist, but I think this could be the explanation.

P.S: Try watching Game of Thrones again! It is awesome. It does have gratuitous sex scenes and some violent scenes, but the story is deep and the characters fascinating (and what a cast of actors/actresses!)... Or maybe read the books, they're better and have less sex/violence! ;)
