shareIt's weird if it was filmed in SA. In the last episode there was a convertible with california license plates. The thing is that almost all california plates used in TV and movies have "PCI" in them, I don't know what's so special about PCI but it is seems be a standard for hollywood, kind of like having 555 as the exchange in all phone numbers.
Anyway, why would they bother with a PCI license plate for a production on the other side of the planet. They probably could have mocked up any old number they wanted.
I noticed the coaches in the last episode were not the boxy North-American style and were right-hand drive.

shareYes, this was indeed filmed outside Cape Town in South Africa. In Stellenbosch to be precise. It is very weird to see my university town used as a backdrop for California. The climate is the same, but I think that's where the similarity ends.
