good movie , but end needs explaining (spoiler)

I was surprised that she would let Evelyn into her life at the end--Evelyn was a terrible mother! and weak ,stupid and wicked, to boot, for letting the sheriff convince her to send her innocent boyfriend to jail for 35 years!
I didn't understand that part, anyway, because Jonas presumably could have gotten off with a plea of self-defence. Nobody had to go to jail. And didn't they all know there was a statute of limitations on the crime ?
Jonas' character was confusing. He had the appearance of an intelligent man, yet he behaved in an idiotic way, threatening the couple right off the bat, and kidnapping the woman. Was Evelyn protecting her brother because there was something "wrong" with him?--if so, that wasn't spelled out.

It sounded like Jonas and Evelyn's Father abused them mentally and finally physically when he beat Evelyn. It also looked like they were really being threatened by the Sheriff but like any victims of abuse didn't seem to realize it and the Sheriff didn't want to lose his way of getting his assets from the company that the Father owened. So as long as he had Jonas and Evelyn believing that Jonas would go to jail he made Evelyn blame her boyfriend of the crime probably thinking he would get off saying it was self defence. I think the Sheriff had false evidence to make it look like he murdered the Father out of spite.

Also the way Jonas behaved was because he seemed to drink alot and Evelyn was on some sort of medication.

The character that I felt most sorry for was the innocent boyfriend who had spent 35 years in jail. Perhaps more than anybody he should have had doubts about re-letting Evelyn back into his life.

I found the statutes of limitation issue interesting because I don't think ordinary people would really know about that. I certainly was relieved that Jonas and Evelyn could get off lightly as they were victims that I had a certain amount of sympathy for as well.
